Purple plants

Whenever someone posts a question asking about making their plants turn purple, they are never told anything about phosphorus. I've noticed a few academic journals online that show the study of common field plants and their dramatic decrease in the ability to uptake phosphorus when exposed to colder temperatures.

Perhaps this holds true in Cannabis plants also. I would like to believe that the darker leaves, stems, and buds that are commonly seen after reducing the grow room temperatures is due to the plant's inability to get the phosphorus it needs. Are products such as "Purple Maxx," simply locking out phosphorus? This would explain why many people have killed their plants after using this product line.

Sit down and have a bowl, I'm really interested in this subject and invite some serious discussion. School me.

Also, if you could get your PH to sit at 6.0-6.5 for the last two week or so, theoretically you'd be locking out a decent amount of phosphorus without locking anything else but Calcium and Magnesium. Sitting at 6.2-6.4 I think you'd see some slight purpling, without harming the plant. I have some experimentation to do for sure! I'll let you know how it goes

some plants are also just genetically purple... i had this one called jalapeno, and even in the peak of summer, it was a crazy mix of purple red and green, even in 85' F days and 70 F nights. also it was the only purple weed i would ever grow again lol purps to me means bad weed usually. GDP tested the lowest THC out of 40 strains at my local shop

It says low pH or high light stress from uvb rays causes the plants to go in to shock, so its obviously not good, and create this anthocyanin as protective "coating" by turning the plants a blue-violet shade.

Maybe the public school system ain't so bad after all.

True GDP is an excellent strain. Hits you right behind the eyes.

+REP!!!!! You are 100% correct about the Phosphorus lockout causing the coloration. You can get good coloration with the proper genetics, but it's never a good idea to drop the temps that much or purposely lock the P out, unless you don't about your yield. Personally, I prefer healthy, well fed plants, as opposed to pretty purple skinny girls. Just my 2 cents.

Then your local shop has shitty GDP lol. When plants are genetically purple there is usually a distinct flavor and taste that comes along with the color. That sweet skunky purple smell and taste everyone knows. If you don't like that than I can see why you would not prefer most purple strains, but color and THC concentration have no effect on eachother.

yea to say that purple weed is usually bad. damn i dont know where you live but jus the other day i picked up some purple odessy from my local dispensary and it was AMAZING! by far one of the best meds ive ever smoked.

GDP is not one of the higher rated THC plants if you think so think again ive said this for years the hype surrounding purple strains and the purps GDP etc. are just that based on color being good eye candy and the taste being fucking fantastic as well as the smell all said it is not this great high strain for me it has always been one of the mellower highs but a good high to stay functional to say the least...Purple widow is one of the strongest purple strains and it is very nice but then not all of them turn purple..

i've rarely been impressed by any purps, regardless how it was grown or where it came from. it's not always true like i say, that jalapeno is amazing... it's like a roller coaster ride it starts like a pure intense sativa for around 2 hrs, then almost instantaneously changes to pure indica, leaving you relaxed and ready for sleep. perfect for the end of a long day. but i agree with stinkbudd1, purps are popular cuz of hype, not science. people are blinded by the color and think it's some sort of magic weed, and that's why growers love it- it sells. i don't know many growers who have purps in their personal stash.

I agree with the fact that "purps are popular because of hype and a lot of growers love it because it sells." But as someone who understands this I still ALWAYS have a nice sweet skunky grape candy like purple in my head stash because I love the taste and smell. Big fan of Sub's Querkle and Black Cherry Soda, but it is all about what you prefer and what you like to smoke. And they are crazy frosted, just as much or more so than most of my green strains.

Edit: I do believe that most purples are not as potent as greens. However, that does not mean I don't like them. I actually prefer them. Their taste is out of this world, and hash is really the only thing that gets my high now a days anyway, so I'd rather smoke something that is enjoyable to me. It probably is just a sentimental thing to me to be honest, I remember a while back, about a year after I first started smoking, I got a hold of some purples from a new dealer at the time (who soon became my primary dealer until I started to grow), got my friend, and after smoking one blunt of it we were high all fucking day (11am till I went to bed). I'm not saying that purple is the best weed, but the best weed I've ever smoked was definitely purple. A lot of my friends who grow agree, and we all have at least one purple plant for our private stash. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

again i'm not saying all purps are bad. i just think it's silly how so many people think purple weed=good weed just cuz it's purple. i remember when my friends used to get all excited when they got purple weed from their dealers and when i was new to smoking i got excited too. after a while i realized a lot of them are famous for color. i have had some that surprised me, i had some grape ape that actually tasted like grape kool-aid, but for the most part i haven't been all that impressed.
