Question about directing light under the canopy & hot spots???

so, growing 2 bubblicious under 400w hps and the 4 leaves that make up the canopy have shaded all the light from the lower sections, i've re directed the light using a foil wrapped pannel about a foot from the plant, the light is now all over the lower section of the plant and the lower veg.

i've hear of pros and cons to this, possibility of buring the stalk but also the possibility of better/improved photosynthasis, am i going to improve my room by doing this or harm my plants?

also, when reading up on this subject people talk alot about hot spots and to avoid them, is this an area or point where light is converging from many angles on a single point??
