Question on type of lights being used

I live in Arizona where ANY cannabis on you or in your possession is a fucking felony, so growing in the window is just too risky.

So, I was wondering what type of lighting gives you the best electricity/growth relation. I heard HID lights are good, but my friend was saying to use UV lamps.

One question- what the HELL is an HID light and where do I get one and what does HID stand for and how much do they cost?

My appoligies whether the answers are obvious or this has been addressed somewhere I missed, because either way it's a stupid question. Thank you :)

Mr I Can Do That For Half
Get a shop light to start plants about 8 bucks at walmart then a 400 watt hps light to flower them.A used 400 watt setup is about $60 a new setup is about $140 roughly.Depends on your electric company 1 light on 24 hours probably 20-40 bucks more a month

HID is High Intensity discharge, typically the HPS(High Pressure Sodium) and MH(Metal Halide) types are what is used for growing. The MV(mercury Vapour) type lights arent recommended as theyre not as efficient, more heat less light.
Usually a 250watt or 400watt is good enough for smaller grows of 2 to 4 plants. Ideally, use the MH for veg and the HPS for flowering. These HID lights require a seperate ballast(like a power pack) that the light plugs into.
The HPS and MH lights can usually be found at any hydroponics stores, usually $100-$250 for a ballast/bulb/holder/reflector package, theres plenty online.
These lights can put out a fair bit of heat so that needs to be considered when designing a setup.
Dont bother with UV lamps.

another alternative is to use CFLs(Compact Fluoro lights), the modern day replacement for the common incandescent light.
