Come to my house and dig me a 50 gallon hole! The only way you would be able to in this clay is if you pulled a rock out that big. ;p

I found some nice, lakeside real estate for this year with real easy going soil. I dug a couple monster holes like I've been taught, and a few that were about the diameter of my girls' current pots, but twice as deep. Gonna see how they compare.
Ok, so I exaggerated a little bit. But a larger ammended hole is needed for ideal drainage and root development.

Not necessarily. Some soils are naturally well-draining. Some people may have real light, sandy soils and need to add vermiculite or something to increase water retention. And here in the south, some of the soil is nothing but red clay and no matter how big you dig the hole it's going to act as a clay pot and hold water. You'd just have a swimming pool instead of a puddle.

But yeah, you need drainage especially in rough ground and especially with chemical ferts.
