So sad to hear man...i've lost 3 of my cats in the past 3 years. I have another that is 16 this year and he is starting to show signs of aging...
You didn't prolong their pain, you tried your best to offer your help. That's all you can really do in a situation like this...

Hats off to you and Chanice. As others have said, you took them in from the cold, lonely, hostile outdoors, where they likely would have been eaten alive, and gave them a warm, comfortable, place to pass; with a loving hand, and food (including your nipple juice). Well done. Be happy for the time you had and try to find happiness knowing you made their passing so much easier. We should all be so lucky.

chanice and i want to thank everyone for the kind words, they have been comforting to us.
on our way out to dinner, the same people who gave us the kittens offered us an 8 week old bundle of fur that they were trying to get find a home for. we accepted and welcomed into our home our 21st pet, who we named blackjack.

Cute kitten, I'm sure when it gets older it will be a little shit and get into everything like my cats. 
I get pissed at them sometimes, then they do something cute and all is forgiven.

i thought i was over their passing, but their memory wandered into my mind just now and i came crawling back to this thread for comfort. thank you everyone for your kind words. we will be planting 'bleeding hearts' plants over their graves tomorrow to commemorate their all too short time on this planet and hopefully add some finality to this whole ordeal.

blackjack had his first vet visit yesterday. no feline leukemia or other bad things in his bloodwork. he is a very healthy weight, and we have taken care of the flea problem he had. what a relief, i couldn't take any more heart break.
the best part about this little guy is that he plays with our dog, unlike all the other cats. they chase each other around, and the dog gives him baths with his tongue.
this kitty gets special kitten food which we have to hide from the other cats, and so when we isolate him in the bathroom to eat, the dog plops down at the door and waits. and waits. and waits. we know the kitten is done eating when the dog comes up to us and starts wagging his tail and running back and forth between us and the bathroom
blackjack is truly the dog's cat. just a match made in heaven. so cute.
