I get the use of the washers. LOL
What I don't understand is why would anyone buy an inner tube and make washers when they could just buy some washers at much lower cost?

I've used nuts as standoff spacers, dirt cheap and will provide a bigger air gap and more cooling than thin washers.
dunno about buying ... but re-purposing, why not/who cares. A cut of rubber 3 ballast-widths long, folded ... pretty thick.

I dont think the idea was to cut washers out of the innertube, but to use them as spacer on each side of the ballast to keep it up and off the board. He has a pic of what he did.
