Reverse Osmosis Water

Hey there everyone,

Ive been using unfiltered city water for the last year and although I havnt had any major problems with it, I've recently noticed how much salt, chlorine, and god knows what else is left behind on the plastic plates that my pots sit in to protect my floor from water damage. And this is after leaving it for at least 24 hours to allow some of the chlorine etc to evaporate. I figure this can't be good for my plants and may be part of the reason why I havn't been able to dial my shit in 100%.

Anyways, im looking into R/O water and was wondering if I am better off getting it from a grocery store or buying a filter myself? My grows arent very big, I only go through approx 5-10 gals each week.

Also if there are any other tips, disadvantages to RO, or any advice that I may not have found in my 10 minutes of research plz feel free to speak up. if you know of good deals on quality ro systems feel free to share that link as well!

Thx for any help!

You are looking at ~ $100 min off the shelf for an RO system. That buys alot of water if you are only using 5-10 gallons per week. Your call.

I bought water for awhile, much happier with an RO unit. Drawbacks of RO water are few but your water bill might go up and you will need to add some form of cal-mag to your nutrients arsenal. Ebay is a good place for cheap stuff but beware if you buy used replacing the RO membrane is probably 1/2 the price of a new unit. If you have a TDS meter your ok but without one there is no way to verify that it is indeed working properly and you would be compelled to buy new filters and RO membrane.

Thank-you for the info. I dont use a TDS meter as I dont find it very necessary for soil, but it wouldn't be a problem to get one and it would improve my plants if anything, not even including the r/o.

It's looking like buying a R/O unit is going to be the best way to go. I highly doubt the grocery stores are all that concerned with how often they change their filter. Id feel better having my own. I run with the General Organics line of nutes and it includes ca mg+ with no NPK in it which im assuming will be nice for R/O so that I can still give em ca-mg if i recently over nuted em with N,P,K, or any other nutrient.

I assume the filters degrade when you use them, not as time goes by, is that correct? Because if it is time based since I only use 5-10 gal weekly id be paying alot for filters compared to how much use im getting out of it. Im thinking they only degrade when used though, ya? That sounds confusing, and I am stoned on some Nirvana Aurora Indica but hopefully you know what I mean lolz.

Thanks again for your responses.

Yeah they will only degrade when being used.... and another bonus.... once you take a drink of the ro water you will never drink water from your tap again! :) everytime I used my ro I would fill a couple gallon jugs to throw in the fridge. I would always dump the first gallon that came out of the unit after sitting for a lil bit with no use.. don't know if it was needed but sounded good to me! Lol

Ro water isn't necessary. The process takes everything out of the water.Things you need as well as a few things you don't .Price aside...not a worthwhile trade off.

go to a water store get some filtered water you can ask what PH the water is they test it everytime they filter the water

its like 20 cents a gallon where im at better then getting 1 gallon of high PH RO water at the store for 1$ a gallon

and you can get a trash can and fill the fucker up with 32gallons and your set for a bit

The water I buy at the store is RO'd because most cities now use a new type of chlorine called Chloramine which doesn't evaporate ever!

P.S.

My RO treated water never gave my soil pH problem even with nutes being fed.

Good luck :)
