Riot seeds. Roadkill Afghani

Just finished my cup of coffee and had to jump in on this. Few things:
1 - really nice grow and set up Kona!
2 - I'm 39 and a half so I'm a little young for the old timers "rks" so prevalent in the 80's time to witness the "real rks" so I can't really comment and am starting to lean towards what RBJesusFreak said that it might just be an oldtimers hazey recollection phenomenon.
3 - I live in the country and drive by dead skunks all the time, so I'm really familiar with the real smell. In my opinion, skunks on the side of road only emit a "skunk" spray smell, unless the car didn't hit the scent gland where the "skunk" smell is. If the car misses the gland, the smell will be a common decomposing animal smell once decomposition sets in (depending on the weather).

Number 3 is why I am leaning towards what RBJF said. If not, oldtimers at @jimihendrix1 , please chime in on what is the difference between a "skunk spray" smell and what you consider rks smell.

I think the skunk spray smell is truly what everyone is after.

That being said, I'm on the hunt too and would love to find a skunk line or pheno to grow. I posted in another thread about searching for rks, but I'm running the following strains looking for it:
- Blue Orca x rks (swami)
- Stonemason (nature farm)
- DLA5 (bodhi)

I'm still in veg on all these and try to give a stem rub as much as possible and always jot down the smells I find if they're strong and I identify them. Funny enough, so far the strain I'm getting the most skunk spray smell from is Bodhi's '89 Northern Lights Noof cut x BCSC NL5 f2's I made a few years ago. One of the females (#5) I seeded had a skunk smell to her. One of her offspring I'm growing now, #18 now has a really strong skunk spray smell on the stem rub. Way more of a skunk smell than what I have recorded on the others mentioned above.

I'm guessing the smells will change during flower, but I thought I'd mention it.

BOHxrks is also giving a little skunk smell on a couple plants so far, but not as strong/pungent as the NL. Stonemason hasn't shown any skunk like smells yet that I've noticed but a more subdued sweet like smell. DLA5, a few have a really unique dead animal smell to them. Like a decomposing animal/beef jerky like smell but it's more acrid and nasty/funky smelling.
First I want to say mahalo. For you nice words and post. And i always think it a great idea to keep track of progress from little babies and on.

So I am about 10 years older than you, so im somewhere in the middle. I didn't start smoking herb till the mid 80's.

The skunk that i am referring to, was more like the skunk that wasn't freshly run over, to where the spray smell is overpowering! It was more of a skunk that was a few miles away. That has that real sharp pungent! Not like ammonia like the spray. I don't like that smell!!

I was considering those Swami RKS crosses, but decided against it after running the Blue Orca Haze and the Hawaiian Cherry Bomb. I realized he was breeding for more crystal content, yield, and stone. But wasn't really focused on smell, flavor, or complexity of the high.
So I don't buy his gear anymore. Although I keep an update on his new gear, just in case I see something really cool.

But on a side note, the skunk I smoked, was referred to as skunk#1. Not roadkill.
And one of its traits that no one has come across, the main one to me, was the insane flavor!!! None of these new versions carries that stay in your mouth skunk lingering flavor!! Yes it was super strong and the high made you laugh your ass off and have the Chinese Red eye syndrome, but that flavor, and it could get you in trouble, even like a half hour after smoking a joint! Because you still smelled it on your breath.

I don't find much, if any, with that much flavor. And it a challenge today to find that really sticky green that gives you red eyes.

Maholo and hola also! Interesting description of skunk. I'm wondering if others' experiences are similar. Also interesting about Swami. I've been on the fence about grabbing the UW x cascadian frost because the pics look so good and frosty. And I've had frosty nugs that were not a great high before and it makes me go hmmmm. So, you're probably right it's all about the breeding and what goals the breeder has/selects for. I'm also running his Nigerian sunshine and NL5xHaze so I'll find out soon enough if I'll get more :)

rks is real for sure. I personally ran a cut for a few years in the 90's. It was a slow indica that looked alot like forum cut. shiny waxy leaves, resin rails, straight fire.

it was skunk spray and rotting roadkill at same time. mine also had diesel fumes burn your nostrils at same time.

I would trade all my worldly belongings to get it back.

Yes! This is what I remember it being in Australia. Was yours a real vibrant pale white green in colour with bright orange hairs? One hit of that shit and you were in disneyland. The smell and flavour was pure knockout too!

Ok so here we are at 3 weeks.
Now just had to bend her over and then sprayed some Plant Therapy.
So got a little hair burn from spray, and also new house, new room, new genetics.
So could be in for an interesting time.
So probably be dialing in as things go.
So please be patient.20190415_205836.jpg

Just waiting for stretch to stop. Probably one more week.
Then I can finally turn on the Co2.
But limited space, so got to wait, or I will outgrow my space.

Rks is real deal, not nostalgia, you could smell buddy from a kilometre away triple bagged smelling like a dead skunk on a hot day, pale green bud, with super bright almost yellow hairs, smoke too much and shit would get trippy fast

I have some of the afghani skunk spray regs coming so I’m going to take cuts and open pollenate and hope I find it

I understand people's scepticism. And that some feel its just a pipe dream.
I'm down with that, as I my self am a sceptic. But a hopeful one!
So lets try not to get too much into the shabby end of things like so many threads seem to go.
Mahalo.

Peoples memories can also not be 100% true. So many people remember a RKS smell but no one can grow it anymore? Breeders apparently are breeding with it now but no one has a cut? And no one can get the pheno to appear from the crosses? ...doesn't seem likely
This is what people are talking about when they complain about the watering down of genetics.. Some shit will be gone or hard as fuck to recreate. Skunk was a novelty.. smelled/tasted like skunk.. high was good but it was really the smell/taste that was a seller.. It was also a P-I-T-A because you could have a personal amount triple bagged and the shit would have your car reeking within 10 minutes. Then people starting breeding the funk out.. there was no gorilla growing skunk etc. and smelling your grow from a block or two away causes anxiety that is not worth the aforementioned novelty.

fwiw '02-'03 was the last time the actual skunk came around town.. there has been skunky bud since then but not the obscene skunk smell that was available somewhat regularly before 02-03 (same exact years I believe the real blueberry stopped going around also fwiw) @genuity and @thenotsoesoteric have touched on the topic a time or two and I think most of us respect their opinion/recollection.

Yea.
That skunk was a completely different smell than skunky ganja!
I can almost smell it!
Blueberry I was getting in 95 from Oregon was the best blueberry in history!!!!
Never found anything remotely close!

If people online knew me personally then they wouldn't be questioning my memory, lol. Im a freaking elephant, man I dont forget shit.

People tried that "your memory must be off" runaround when I went off on that old school blueberry is gone. the blueberry cut that many of us had is gone and it was really that good, I promise that. Same with the skunk I grew in 01. You didnt have to tell anyone what the name of the strain was, nor did you have to pull it out of your pocket for them to guess correctly. Even people that didnt smoke always said the same shit, "god damn that shit smells like a skunk! How the fuck you guys smoke that nasty shit." Lol good times

When I hear someone say it was about the novelty smell I know, they were not smoking the original skunk number1. I first heard about it in 1977 or 78 my brother came back from san diego and told me about it and about hawian that looked like grass clippings. In1979 I ventured to sandiego and got to try skunk for myself, about a gram for 20 bucks which was high for the time, sticky covered with resin dark green indica looking bud. Fire it up, choke you expansive smoke one lungfull was all you needed then laugh your ass trippy too high buzz for hours. Smell was not what I expected from something called skunk yes it was loud and at times skunky especially when left in a car or a room and you came back wow, the exhaled smoke stunk kinda like a skunk too. It was all about that insane quick too high buzz thats why it was crossed to everything and everyone kept cuts of it at the expense of making more pure seeds so you had to cross it to whatever you had and it kept that quick high. Oh and at the time I was not a newbe to smoking good weed all the time I was there it was thi stick and diff mexs and homegrown and smoked all most daily before going there, I was a pothead. I never tried a good blueberry all the ones peeps handed me were crap.
