S0uP's MastodoN KusH SCROG Grow!!! 200w/SQ FT?? THIS THREAD SUCKS!!!

So I picked up some Mastodon Kush (Pre-98 Bubba Kush x Master Kush) clones (PO calls them XXX but they have the same genetics as Emerald triangle Mastodon and show the same characteristics so we will see, all I can say is that they are not confirmed genetics at this point and dont wanna get my balls busted for it later! :))
Its been awhile since I was growing and although Ive been growing in soil for the better part of a decade I can honestly say this is going to be the first solo effort in a hydroponic environment (I know the ins and outs but there WILL be user error, which always makes for a fun show! Unabated success is boring after awhile) Ive got no real expectations for this as far as yield goes so that always nice mostly because;

1) Its a new environment for me
2) New genetics
3) New medium
4) I dont smoke nearly as much as I used to so all I really care about is that me and mine have enough quality erb to get us through...:) Plus I REALLY am far more addicted to growing pot than anything else and have missed it, so without further ado.... Lets celebrate mediocrity!

At first I made a recirculating Hempy set up in a tote with both a self contained AND external reservoir, 100% perlite medium, I added airstones both to the hempy res and the external.I flooded the tote roughly every 3 hours. I was able to maintain stable pH and didnt experience PPM swings of any kind (Even with a small 5 Gal. reservoir). In theory this sounded to me to be a successful set up. It wasnt. Dont get me wrong, I wasnt hurting the cuts they just werent as happy as they should have been and I grew tired of watching them creep along at geriatric speed. The medium lacked stability in the tote and I believe the internal reservoir to do nothing but limit the space for tap root extension in addition to keeping the rootball far too saturated for satisfactory formation. I decided to make a change. As you can see in the pics I made flood buckets almost identical to a cap ebb and flow setup. There is a screen in the bottom of the strainer bucket as well as a layer of lava rock to prevent perlite or rogue root shoots to either back up the system or find there way back to my reservoir. I set up a drip ring that top feeds to flood point bout 3 times a day with light on. The medium is still almost 100% perlite with just a few added lava rocks for support. This really is just a twist on Flowamastas system and want to give my shout out now before I start taking credit for any success (know that if this fails though I am holding you accountable bro! :))

Right now they are in a 2.5'x2.5' Growlab tent vegging under a 400w Cool Blue metal halide with the glass in my hood removed for added UV spec. Im gonna tuck them into the SCROG screen till roughly 60-70% is filled and then....Ive got plans for them to flower under 1000w HPS.... Yes folks that is 200w/Sq ft!!! I ran a practice run for 2 days with the HPS and was able to maintain canopy temps of 82-85* The plants showed a little sign of stress at the intensity so I switched back to the Mh. I havent given up on the 1k yet though and have AC options and Inline fans laying around from when I had my bigger rooms so I am COMMITED to making this work! If all else fails I have a 5'x5' tent in my room I can flower them in but really want to see what that kinda space can produce.

Currently temps sit at about 73* res temp 70* RH 45% pH 5.9 PPM 600. I flush every 7 days. All is well.
I am running a mix mash of nutrients and may just change every week up until Harvest!!!;) the list includes but not limited to; AN,DynaGro, FoxFarm, Rock Nutrients, Greenfuse, Botanicare, House and Garden Magic Green, Bleach for res, Epsom salt for Mg,and whatever else I got lying around. Half this crap I got for free, if I had to pay Id be using Jacks proffesional/ Cal nit for 15$Shipped......Its all salt.

Finally, feel free to post pics in here or comment. Tell me how crappy my apartment looks on my crappy quality phone pics :) I dont care. Smoke a bowl, and chill its all good. I will try to update this once a week at least and promise to finish out the journal (Im no tease miss!) Chances are come closer to harvest time Ill update more often with Bud Porn, whether Im aware of it or not...Its like masturbation for gardeners ya know? Finally some pics; Enjoy!

Hey dude thanks for stopping in! This is a mock up of flowas system, I believe the waterfarms have a reservoir in the bottom and that the root system is supplied with DO from the constant exchange of nutrients and water from the drip ring on top. With this sytem the reservoir is external and nutrients are returned via gravity. I like the simplicity of this system, all work on my reservoir can be done without disturbing my grow area. During flower, if it werent for my OCD and the pictures I want to take I wouldnt even need to open the tent! Although I have seen really good results with the water farms I like the simplicity, versatility, and initial cost of this system. As I mentioned in the original post I have a 5x5 already set up in the bedroom and if I experience some reasonable success with this grow I can always expand to up to 12 modules of the same type with minimal cost and just an upgrade in size to the reservoir, I dont think an overly large water pump would even be required to make the modular system functional. -S0uP

Good to see ya easty! Pull up a chair, grab a beer, and enjoy the show! Thanks for the compliments! They do seem to enjoy that MH Blue! I think they really prefer the low temps too (Must be that pre-98). That green gets nicer every time I foliar it seems! Im excited to see them in flower, but think Ive got 2 more weeks before the flip. Although they are very hearty plants it seems they are a bit slower in veg than my usual strain choices and man are they bushes! That being said Ive already got 1/2" diameter stalks and I think the patience will pay off in a big way! Im hoping of having a full screen of "A" Buds to manicure. In addition these girls are supposed to be "HEAVY" feeders but have really put on some beautiful growth since I started giving them the DYNA GRO and cut there PPM levels back from 800 to just below 600! Got some pics of them being tucked in to there screen yet again...-S0uP

G'day Soup, i also will sit in on another hempy run!

I have just started distilling, this being my second wash. I used 6 kg of dextrose and mixed it up to the 25 litre mark with water. My first batch got me 3.4 litres of 85% ethanol. I watered my first batch of bourbon down to 43% and soaked 5.5 litres in some oak chips plus some wild turkey chips for 3 weeks. Strained and then added some bourbon essence and left it for a few more weeks. It tastes quite good considering the short time to make and the fact i am using little bottles of essence. Pretty sure it is a cheats way of making it:-P Some recipes from a keen distiller would be great, Soup!! I am keen to make some honey oil from my homemade ethanol also!

Best of luck with your hempy grow mate:weed:

Cheers Chipper

Thats funny stuff bud, cause in a pinch I put some liquid smoke (for BBQ'n!) and a bit of honey in my whisky to "quick" cure it, and I thought it came out pretty good as well! :) Ill get out some of the recipes and send them your way soon (I can take no full credit for them though all were stolen from somewhere) but at least I know which ones are good! I personally like corn washes (CHEAP) but have had good results with Horse feed and sugar believe it or not! Course, its always fun to distill some schnapps as well for m' lady (Thats what I say so no one thinks I drink fruity alcohol, but its soooooooo good1) next time for kicks throw a big bag of jalapenos and apple chunks into your wash and see what comes out meh! (Not kidding, drink of the GODS) Well thanks for stopping bye chipper hopefully we can get this show on the road soon enough!-S0uP

Thanks man, Im stoked on the performance I see with their products on a regular basis! I think Home brewer on here does some awesome side by side comparisons and Dyna Gro performs well in all. I think he points out that it lacks a little N in the bloom formula so he supplements with grow. I think I decided to run the AN connoisseur at 1/5th strength the DG Grow at 1/4 and the DG Bloom at 1/3 for the flower cycle on these Mastodon Kush girls, supplemented by the Rock Resignator I want to try... (Ive heard REALLY good things). As far as all the products they are just odds and ends from years of build up dude! last time I packed everything up I didnt even save the 5gallon bottles cause they were too big to put in storage, but oh well. Funny though right, shit I cant even imagine paying for all that stuff! Some of the bottles the grow shop guy gave me to try over the years have 40$ price tags on em and the resignator I got for free is something like 70-80$ a liter. Good thing they give the stuff away for free if you email em huh:) What a rip all that crap is....like I said in the end its all just salts. If I had a big project going I would look over Fatmans advice on mixing my own *Wink* *Wink* In the mean time Ill put the freebies to use... Call JRpeters when I run out! -S0uP

sweeeeeeeeet ;p subbed!!
Awesome man, wouldn't have it any other way.... Hope your inspection is over soon I cant wait to see the AG take to that screen! You think with the right training and maybe 7-10days more Veg 1.5 is out of the question? Either way, she looks like a promising cut bet shes almost a teen by the next time we see her! You think clones would make it from the AU to the USA???:) (Wishful thinking!) Anyways thanks for stopping bye!

So I gave the res a REAL good flush and scrub today. I had noticed some salt build up at the bottom and I am FAR too OCD to let that fly, so I flushed the system out with some slightly warm water and dextrose like 3-4 times. Dextrose helps in the combustion of salt molecules and mixed with water at a Tablespoon/Liter will give you the EXACT same make up as a bottle of flora kleen. Use accordingly just don't run it continuously with a nutrient solution. I then flooded the buckets with the new nutrient solution 2 times to soak into the perlite. Trying a much larger ratio of the Dyna Gro and just a bit of the Sensi since they responded to well. Also, Im trying a 3/4 dose of Rocks Supercharged which is a root tonic in lieu of the green fuse. The girls look happy, I just wish they would fill that screen up over night so I could flip them tomorrow! Looks like Im gonna be putting them in the 5x5 after all for timing purposes...ugh

All said and done pH 6.0
PPM 715
Res Temp 71*

And I manged to break off 2 tops while tucking her into the screen directly after this pic! Yay Mediocrity! :( -S0uP

great to hear man!! I understand your liking with the flora-kleen soulution / dextrose, I did use flora-kleen for a couple of grows, and loved it!, using it for the flush only ofcourse always left it sparkling clean.... i miss it actually, trying to save money , but haven't had any issues having a clean system these days, i try hard not to over-feed. But its hard when you are feeding aggressively to amplify growth :) If it works use it man! Everyone has their unique twist and thats what it should all be about :) 5 of the same strains can be grown completely DIFFERENT by other setups, each producing vastly different results :) It keeps things unique trying new ideas...

all the best soup, i think im passing out.... again

I hear ya bro, thats what makes this soooo addicting though! Finding your strain and DIALING that bitch in!!!!!.....speaking of; Im getting really impatient with the veg progress on this lady. I took a look at the screen and didnt like how I saw things turning out so I pulled all the crap I had tucked and centered the plants in the tent (originally i planned to have them grow horizontal towards the front but these girls are just too bushy) Then I went and grabbed another inline from storage and threw in the 1k!Temps are looking good so Im thinking that I give these two a couple days on the veg cycle to acclimatize them to the intensity and if all is well, as soon as I see roots on the cuts Im going to flip (looking for opinions here, I want to yield as much as I can but dont think I can hold out for that screen to fill up). In the future I think running more of these in that sized spaced would be more beneficial than an extended vegetation period. Anyways I have a few days to think about it while the cuts hopefully take root and the girls need to bounce back from the hell I put them through today. Here are some pics, I know they look beat up a bit but they will be reaching for that 1k in no time!-S0uP

Looking good Soup, so nice and green :D

I think you've done the right thing with centering the plants too, with the 1000 in there now, I reckon give them another week or two and flip :) you will end up with some super thick buds man :D

I think so too man, better to be on the safe side... I kinda despise growing a strain out for the first time in that there are bound to be some surprises. How "nasty" they are can usually be contained with a little restraint and hopefully just a small sacrifice to yields(this applies to PPM levels, when to flip, training...all the things you can push once you know the limits). I am anxious to let these two show there true colors though! Thanks for stoppin in easty!-S0uP
