Decided to try germinating seeds in a shoe lace and bubbler and these are the results so far.

One of the seedlings stretched because I had inadequate lighting at the beginning of experiment. The short one sprouted later and with good lighting. I usually clone but this should be interesting.

Are you using the shoelace to wick water from the res up? Is the water just standing? And what is your thoughts on removing the seedling from the shoelace when the roots are intertwined in it?

He could just cut the lace from below the roots and plant that. They should work around and through it.

The reason I tried this is because I do dwc without net pots so no need to remove seedling from foam. The shoelace reaches the water and two airstones in res. Here's a picture of a mature plant without a net pot.

I've heard about people doing it this way before to avoid using plugs. Thanks for sharing the pics - looks like you have it down and no issues. Any idea of the material of the shoelaces? Was leaning towards trying to find undyed cotton.

Undyed cotton would be best. The string i used came from a hoodie. Felt like it had the most cotton in it. I also trimmed the inside of the foam puck a bit as shown in picture to try and not make it so airtight. Not sure if I will have issues with shoe string, first time I try. The picture of mature plant is a clone.
