The black you are seeing is probably mold.
You should never let the paper towel dry out, they should always be moist. Also try soaking them in a cup of distilled water for 12-18 hours before you use the paper towel method.

i mean i water them again when the paper towels absorbs most of the water that i poured, and yeah i'll throw them in a cup of water

I've never seen a reason to crack outside the growing media, all seeds only have a small amount of energy stored in them and it seems like germinating like this is a waste.

Don't forget to give me some likes,
I need 25 more :)
Well i always germ in paper towels have done for a long time if it works for you then it works for you i even have good success popping old seeds in paper towels works fine provided you keep it wet and check it plenty and dont wait ages to put it into the soil i think thats where lots mess up i find germinating in soil slightly slower i only do it in soil straight away if i was growing an auto as i find they need it earlier vs photos

How long have you been trying to germinate them ? In damp paper towels they should pop within three or four days . Some really old seeds may take longer but I have found that when they look black they are rotten inside .. I have had a whole white sprout ( after two or three days in a moist paper towel) ,, lay gently on the moist clay pebbles, prop and carefully lay a few more pebbles in place and they turn up in and hour or so and green up in no time at all .. Or lay it in a cup of soil and do the same .

I first tried this method, but seems like a lot of work and extra steps. Now I use rapid rooter cubes in a tray with heat mat and dome, so far 100% success with seeds and cuttings

they're about 62 hours in, i've never had this problem even when germinating non fem seeds and they all popped, for now i will keep those 2 in a cup of water which is the best way i assume and then throw them back into the paper towel or straight in the pot

Seeds that go black are probably dead. They were probably older seeds. If they have any viability, keeping them in water at this point will kill them for sure. I would put in dirt and hope for the best.
Which auto's are you running?

My 2 cents...
If they are black black give them a squeeze. If they are hard, give it a try. If mushy, time to start new ones.
An overnite soak is a great indicator of seed viability. If it does not sink, it is most likely dead.
I always use paper towel and then place my sprouts in go cups. I put damp paper towel on a plate and place in a large ziplock bag. This time of year I have to sit them on a heat mat (dry out fast be careful), they just wont sprout without it. Not even the top of the fridge. My house is just too cold I think.
Planting straight in dirt, They seem to pop slower, I find seeds go too shallow in the cup and watering can displace them. They can move to the side or surface, but if they have a bit of a tap root they will stay in place.
In past summers, if I start 6 seeds in solo cups. 4 may pop. Dig thru other 2 cups and usually cant even find the other seeds. Can be frustrating.
Vegetable seeds go straight in dirt. Most pot seeds are too dear to me to take the chance.
IMG_0324.JPG stays in place.

IMG_0325.JPG one of the towels dried out too much on heatmat and slowed these three C99s, but constant 100% germination. 2 days usaully does it.

IMG_0323.JPG Aug. Timewarp 6/6, C99 Timewarp 6/6, C99s plus 3 above 6/6. Spring is a comin.
cuttings at back are pretty fresh and look a bit sickly. They do that. Not to worry.

P.S. what do giving and receiving likes, do for us?

one of them has a white spot on the top of the seed, root is starting to come out i assume, i'm gonna keep them in a wet paper towel, i think at least this second one should be fine but first one is probably dead cause it hasn't sprouted a little and it's been 3 days already.

those sound nice. The one with the white tit showing keep in the paper towel. The one that nothing happened on...put it in a glass of water. If it floats let it stay in the water for 8 hours or so, then try putting back in the paper towel. If it sinks, it's already cracked and you might just as well throw into dirt and hope for the best.
