Seeds

Depends on how you are growing.

I like non fem seeds. But also grow fem.

If you want a short veg time and immediate flip with little to no worries for a male do fem. If you are going to scrog multiple plants during that short flip do fem.

If you are taking your time, letting them sex naturally and then sorting them do regs.

I mostly go with fem seeds for rec grows. If it looks like a strain I'd like to breed with, or like something I'm going to want to run over multiple years I'll get reg seeds. It's just hard to breed when you're growing outdoors and don't want to pollinate your neighbour's crop. Another reason to get fem seeds.

I top them, stick the top into a glass of water and put it into 12/12. Or, if I'll be vegging them long enough, I'll stick them in a glass of water till they root, plant them, let them grow a week or two, then flip.
I did put a plant under 12/12 from seed till it showed sex and then revegged it, but that stalled it out for a while and it never fully recovered. It still grew, but it wasn't at it's full potential.

That's the plan here essentially, top everything and SOG it to determine sex and phenos and keep the good moms.

Pretty much fem only now for me. I have limited space and wasted too much time growing plants that turned out to be males.
