Well out of 5 seed 2 sprouted. And out of those 2,1 curled so I planted that one...We will see if it is a female...I will keep you posted.
you should have kept the uncurled one also. this method of sexing hasnt been proven yet, you could have thrown out the female.

wow.. only 2 of 5? i have a better germ rate with bagseed! who are your seeds from?!
I was thinking the same thing, but i kept my mouth shut. There are alot of posters who just undercover talk shit about peeps setups, plants and seeds. But since you brought it up i would also like to know. Why does your seed stock have such a bad germ rate?

im not trying to talk trash,, i was just amazed... i hope you are using bagseed and just havent learned the proper technique for testing a seed... so here it is:
gently squeeze a seed inbetween your thumb and index finger.. if it pops (breaks open) it is a dud (most likely premature).. a healthy seed should have NO green in it and appear to have veins and/or "tiger stripes"... they are all generally the same size as well,, so if you notice a seed much smaller than the rest it is most likely a dud

2 out of 5 is *real* close to a 50:50. Could have been 2 out of 5 or 3 out of five. Still fell down to a 50:50 for the deciding vote.

Unless Fem seeds (which, word on the street says its the most hermie prone from genetics), 2 out of 5 is on mark.
hmmm...most of the time i am at 100%... i get pissed when a seed doesnt crack

maybe you are using a different method for germ or something... who knows

also.. i saw a site that was selling cheap seeds because of low expected germ rates... 70%

"I have just secured some stock of Durbak Skunk of a good pedigree, but with a tested germination rate of 70%. (a little lower than normal)"

actually 3 out of five seeds not even sprouting is not good. To put it in perspectve, my first grow i orered 90 cali mist seeds from Serious Seeds. 80 germinated, and of those 80 58 or so were female. Now THAT is a good germ rate, and male/female rate. As a matter of fact that i think was excellent. But when more than half dont even germ then there is a problem with somthing. It might be the seeds themselves, or just your water.

interesting... if this is a tried and true method, it will be very beneficial for those who grow with the AEROGARDEN...

When you have to rip the roots to separate male from females, it becomes a real problem

I've never had a seed not germ. Does any one know at what age the plant actually has a sex, im wondering if its undetermined until it is.... some one might say well duh, but think about it what if its like other plants and doesnt decide until day x? just a thought...

If you read "the bible" (Mel and Ed), then it basically says that a seedling won't determine sex until a couple of weeks into sprouting and that the sex can be influenced by conditions like temp, nutes, lighting etc. But what the hell, I would love to see this experiment has some merit and that the book is still right. As long as you don't stress out the curled seed it will always be female? Hmmm....

i believe sex is in the chromosomes,, which are from birth.. so its not like at any point the plant "decides" what sex it will be.. this could be why a self-pollinated female forced hermaphroditic produces feminized seeds which a high chance of a hermie.. because it has no direct male father by right... just a female with male parts

I was gonna germ the superskunk but i like to make the soil/mix myself for the seedlings and i went to town and didnt buy my peat.Sometimes they bust in 12 hrs so i need the peat.

here you go,, a curly tail... we'll see
By this method, that 'root action' wouldn't indicate female sex. As I said, the way I heard it if the root comes out and goes straight out (well, not necessarily perfectly straight, but not curled) then it could go either way. If it curls over itself then its a bitch.

The Seed I just planted was way more curled than that one shown..So it is probably a female??

I don't know how else to say "curl over itself". I guess take your right arm and grab the back of your left shoulder. You want an action like that.
