Sexing Marijuana Plants

The most usual method is to force flower a labeled clone to determine the sex, rather than the incorrect method of forcing the Seedling & then reverting it to vegetative growth again. If you are a seedling grower that doesn't clone, or a grower who has no sectioned off vegetative and flowering grow spaces, the simplest method is only to wait for the preflowers (primordia), and sexual maturity to appear while the seedling is in vegetative growth. In other words, if you wait until they are 6 to 8 weeks old, virtually all plants will show you their gender without any forcing. Seedling growers who don't clone are really missing out on the good potency potential of their finished crop whenever they force their seedlings before they've become sexually mature.

When is the earliest you can clone? I mean, how tall does the seedling have to be? Or how many leaves/nodes does it have to have or whatever? Mine are really really small right now, but I'd still like to know when the earliest I could clone is so that I can determine their sex.

Hi Booy,

The rule of thumb for gardening.... of all kind.. whether it be mowing your front yard or trimming your trees, is, to never reduce a plant by more than 1/3 of its MASS during any single cloning/pruning session

An MJ plant can be cloned with only 3-4 nodes succeessfuly but this would probably require you to break the 1/3 rule... which i have done... : )

Ideally one should wait until there is secondary growth... This is approximatley day 20+ when growing from seed.

Definitely one of the coolest geezers on this site. As soon as I find out how to give respect points... or votes... or whatever, i'm going to give them to you. Your advice is certainly impressive, and so freely given. Thanks Garden Gnome, i'm sure, from cultivaters everywhere.

i heard that the general rule is that once a plant hits 12 inches you can go 12/12
less of a yield with that though

I hope I'm not beating a dead thread here, but . . .

I get the impression from the original post that doing the 3 days dark thingy before the plants are really ready to go to flower stage, and then reverting to 20 - 4 light until they are fully ready will impair the finished quality of the yield.

I was hoping to do that as I sorta hate using the space and effort to nurture several males only to toss them with a meager yield of some small male buds to show for it.

I started this bunch with seeds, it probably goes w/o saying.

also, while it is impossible to sex a SEED (some claim to be able to sex seeds which is impossible) you can sex seedlings after about the 4-5 set of leaves/nodes by looking at the plant itself. females will generally be shorter with a more compact structure, while males will be taller and lankier. i generally sex my seedlings visually like that , but i mark them and then force them to show sex after about 3 weeks. in all the years ive been doing it like that, ive only been wrong one time on 2 plants. when i force sex them, ill put them in a "sexing box" i bilt out of plywood and leave them in the dark for 24-36 hours, then switch them to 12/12. it also helps to have them on either 16/8 or 18/6 before sexing in the box. they generally show sex in 1 12 hour cycle like that. personally ive never noticed any reduction in quality or yield doing it this way as your not letting the plant go for more than a couple of days before putting it back on either 18/6 or 24 hour light.

Dead thread I know but great advise, I agree with old man saying that 2 days or 3 days of 1212 then reverting to 18 and 6 how much stress will that really cause and how much are u really getting set back doing this, I'm went to 1212 2 days ago and have had 2 nights of 12 if anyones interested how this works out check my signature, I'm hopeing to be totally sexed and vegged to max capacity by the beginning to the middle of 4/2011

You see that too?
then we have to get it back to life.
The advice here where really great.

Marijuana plants are either male or female . The male Marijuana plants produce pollen which pollinates the flowers of the female Marijuana plant, which once pollenized, produce seeds . If the female Marijuana plant isn't pollenized (if there are no male Mariuana plants nearby producing pollen), the flower/buds continue to develop and produce THC. Female Marijuana plants which are not pollenized are referred to as sinsemilla (without seeds). Usually 30-50% of the Marijuana plants are male.
