Should I put my seeds in dirt as they crack open?

Or wait until more of the seeds have cracked too? I have 10 sees in a paper towel, it's been 17 hours. So far 2-3 have cracked and the little root things are just starting to poke out.

I'm prepping some cups and dirt right now. I figured I'd wait another 4 hours or so and check on em again, but maybe I should plant them as they crack?

you should wait until you see some of the seedling come out of the seed... then plant ,make shure the top of the seed faces upward and the root faces down

What Mr. Sessemia says is correct, Wait until the root coming out is a bit longer.. then stick in a cup of soil. What i like to do is put some clear plastic wrap over the cup with some holes in it. That way you have a nice warm, moist environment for your babies

Why would you have to wait for the taproot to get bigger?

I soak them in water, and after a day or so they crack and I place them taproot down in a cup of soil. Usually the taproot is only barely coming out.

I try to remove as many unnecessary steps as possible.

Okay, thanks guys. I'll wait a bit longer. I just lowered some room temp water to 6.3. I was planing to put the cups in a clonning dome with a seedling mat underneath so they'll stay warm. Would it be better to put plastic wrap over each individual cup?

thanks again!

From what I've read there are several different methods. Some people like to shove a seed into the dirt from the get go, some like to put it in a cup of water and others, like myself, put 'em in paper towels. I don't know how just shoving them in dirt works, or barely cracking them works, but I know letting the tap root grow won't hurt a thing! My babies left the paper towel looking like this:

They were only in the paper towel 4 days! Now they are well on their way to growing, hopefully, into some beautiful ladies!

I just checked them again, 4 hours after the last time. One was about 1/2 as long as the ones in your picture so I went ahead and put that one in dirt, in a keg cup, which is in a dome, and I also put some plastic wrap over the cup and cut a small slit with a razor blade. There's a seedling heat mat under the dome...

I sprinkled a little water on the paper towels and put the rest of the seeds back in the cupboard on a heat mat.

4 days? Good to know. I'll check mine again tomorrow on my lunch break..15-16 hours from now.

Thanks for the tips!

That 1st seed that cracked is already popping out of the dirt! I put the only one that had a 1/4" tap root poking out in dirt at 8:00 last night. I just went and looked in the dome and it has poked out of the dirt already! It's almost 6:00 pm so it took about 10 hours. seems fast.

The rest are still in the paper towel. I checked them at lunch and another has a tap root about that same length so I'll pop that one in tonight.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!! I'm happy to report 100% germination! All 10 seeds cracked and grew tap roots. I just put the last 2 into dirt, and noticed 5 are already poking out of the dirt, one shed it's shell already. Unfortunately while putting my last seed into dirt I broke the tip of the tap root off, only a tiny part, there was still 1/4" left so I finished Covering it with dirt.. Hopefully it'll make it...

Thanks again!
