That's a whole other conversation.

Defoliation is the belief that removing leaves will improve quality and quality of buds.

Lollipopping is the belief that removing the bottom 1/3 of the plant will reduce larf.

Two different things.
But the leaves? I assumed lollipopping was a defoliation sort of kinda. I do it bc of my climate, l guess if your taking leaves from top of plant it would slow down, talking top ten nodes and leaves that support them. After the nodes are branches the branch will support the plant not the fan leaf, usually in dark by then. Or not getting much light. Guess there are too many factors to count. Stripping a plant of leaves doesnt make sense to me. I just pruned everything off my indoor a gave her a 1ft canopy approximatey. Cant tell from above. Babys wearing very high heels now. I dont want any inferior buds taking from mains. Guess lll find out.

Lollipopping is removing everything but the main stalks from the bottom 1/3 or so from the plant.

It could be considered defoliation but it's more than that. Small branches and bud sites are also removed, not just leaves.

Nice info itt, thanks!
I have Sativa growing in the greenhouse (my first grow), and I am leaving the fan leaves alone. However, I have a LOT of "sucker branches", between 1 and 10 inches long. Should I chop all these off, or leave some near the top? Any tips appreciated, thanks.

What about lollipopping, l dont leave the leaves.
Is it harming the big buds you're leaving on the plant? How do you know? What good evidence is there that "lollipopping" has any effect?

The null hypothesis is these techniques are not helpful, that a healthy plant with all of its leaves is best. It takes evidence to reject the null hypothesis. That is the basis of science. "I do it and it works" or "He does it and it works" is not good evidence.

Totally disagree. I had literally zero larf. My buddy had ounces of it. The difference? I defoliated regularly. Just because a plant grew a leaf doesn’t mean if you remove it, the plant will decrease in overall quality. Idk how else to explain it. Had I NOT defoliated on my first run, I’d have had PM the entire grow because I didn’t do any topping. I’m on my second run and followed a mainline tutorial and the maintenance has been significantly lower. I don’t see the point in leaving a bunch of wilted fan leaves that are basically laying down on top of the medium doing nothing but taking energy. I ask myself, is this leaf giving or taking from the plant?
That's a cool story bro, but what about the evidence? Still not seeing any evidence beyond "my bro defoliates and he grows fire."

That pretty little bud site is getting partial light. Some people harvest in two phases because their lower buds and even lower colas get obstructed and end up lime green.
I see where you’re coming from though, that’s larf you’re talking about, and that’s why plants need to be lollipoped imo. If you’re into making has and shit like that fly away and leave the sucker branches. But I only smoke joints pretty much and just want pure solid bud.

I have read long threads on why. And they all make sense. With so many opinions on the subject would just like to see who do and who don’t. Trim fan leaves Also add how long you been growing and if you trim in flower or veg
Thanks
Not a simple answer to your simple question :wall:

If need be , YES.... If need be..
Inside ? Outside? Too many variables.

I'm not just talking about larf. Any bud that gets shaded by a leaf is going to be lighter colored.

I think scrogging is a big part of it. When your plants are allowed to open up they naturally get more light. When they are all stuffed together under a net, you have major light obstruction.
