Signs of Root Bound?

So my ladies are currently 21 inches tall and im noticing a lot of smaller roots becoming more frequent on the lower end, i plan on putting them into flower tomorrow probably, my question is, will i be ok leaving them in the 5 gallon pots they are currently in? im growing Jillybean which has a 80/20 indica/sativa and they have only vegged for about 3 weeks, just looking for expert advise before i make any moves.

what do i need to look for to see root bound, do the leaves change? and when i transition to flower do i have to transition the lights and the nutrients at the same time or is better to work into the flower nutes?

The general rule of thumb is 1 gallon of soil per month grown. It sounds to me like your way over that. If you are going to veg for about a month I would suggest 3g pots. You need to get air into the soil and a small plant in a large pot won't be able to suck the water out fast enough which could lead to other problems such as root rot.

As for signs of root bound. The biggest would be shedding otherwise healthy looking leafs.
Roots coming out of the drainage holes.
Poor water retention.

i dont see roots coming OUT of the drainage holes but they are pretty frequently appearings around the holes, no water retention at all, these babies are strong and they arnt losing any healthy leaves yet, so based upon this, im probably overthinking huh?

3 weeks veg from seeds? 21 inches tall in 3 weeks!!! My god what am I doing wrong my sour diesel is only 10 inches tall at 3 1/2 weeks.

With those large pots I wouldn't be worried about rootbinding. I would worry about nute buildup in areas the roots haven't reached too yet. Could cause some burn later on when they finally do extend to those areas.

Possibly you need more light. Strains grow at different rates. Id rather have a short bushy plant than a tall lanky one. Makes my lights more efficient.
