Smart pots transplanting size?

I was looking at some 1 gallon smart pots at the nursery the other day and was thinking, are those big enough to transplant to a 3 gallon smart pot? These 1 gallons smart pots are tiny. I know smart pots are supposed to be slightly smaller compared to plastic container pots of the same size but.....what do you think?
What size smart pot do you veg in before transplanting to a 3 or 5 gallon smart pot?

I've been using the fabric pots for ~1 year. I go party cup -> 1gal -> 2 or 3gal, then either 5 or 7 gal depending on the run. I find these easier to transplant too. I wash and re-use them, haven't had to scrap one yet. You can let them go much bigger in these without worrying about roots getting bound, great tech.

I would recommend only using the smart pot for the final pot. I go solo cup > 1 gallon regular pot > 5 gallon fabric pot. I have not transplanted from fabric to fabric pot, but I know the roots tips grow into the fabric before they are air pruned so releasing those from the fabric may be troublesome.

I am hopefully getting air pots for next cycle but for now I go from 18oz solos to 3gal smartpots then a week before the flip I go into my 7gal smart pots....So many ppl I talk to say the go from rapid rooters or solo cups directly in their 5 or 7gal smart pots and say they have no problems. IMHO I have a hard time thinking the plant is not fighting to make enough roots and not spending energy growing up plus watering or should I say over watering becomes an issue. I could be wrong but just my two cents...

it doesn't hurt them one bit as ling as you don't botch your transplant and somehow manage to drop it on the floor or something. At least it never has in my experience. Just peel it down Like a sock. Have your new pot ready with a layer of soul on the bottom. Try and center the plant as well as you can. Backfill sides and water away.

I've found the same thing going fabric to fabric, it's easier imo than plastic, the roots are contained well and the ball comes out in one piece once you peel back the pot, the nature of how the root ball develops in fabric makes it easier imo.

I lightly push on the outside of the smart pot, working my way around to loosen up the dirt. Then I'm able to slide them out of the smart pot while the soil keeps the same shape as the old pot. Very little loss of soil, if ones being stubborn I just peel the pot away like removing a sock. I find them very easy to work with.

If you want to move them and are worried about smart pots not being sturdy enough, buy the ones with handles.

I do...I go from solos to 3gal smartpots to 7gal smartpots...Just make sure you have a good root base established in the solo but not root bound then be gentle...I like to have the soil in the 3gal nice a moist but not wet then make the hole a bit bigger than the solo and fill it in with dry soil that way the roots grow in all direction seeking the moisture around the edges and bottom. I let them go without water for 2-3 days and bam my plants never go in shock or show signs of stress, it's like the don;t skip a beat! Everyone has their own methods this is just mine...happy growing!
