Smell in grow room

Have a 400 cfm inline fan and carbon filter combo inside a 4x4x7 tent exhausting into a 30x50 foot basement. There is some noticeable odor in the basement with one of the autos into about week 3 of flower. Carbon filter problem?

How olds your filter?
Sometimes you'll still get a little bit of smell if you have a really really stinky skunk strain.
Or possible leak if you're not running negative pressure.

Do you have any fresh air going in?

I got this fan filter combo. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00DIH7TL0/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is 3 months old.

Air is sucked through the filter, light hood, into the fan and through ducting outside. Two intake vents are opened at opposite sides of the tent and looking at the tent when door is closed, it concaves in which indicates negative pressure. Occasionally an intake fan of about half the strength of the exhaust will bring in fresh air from outside but it only turns on after a certain temp threshold is exceeded.

Aussie? Come say Gday in the aussie growers thread.

Does the smell only escape when the air intake fan kicks in?

Could the fan be to powerful and its not giving the filter enough time to work properly?

Unfortunately I'm a Canadian but brothership. The smell is starting to emanate around the entire house and even outside so I would have to say that it's not only when the fan kicks in which is probably about 3 hours a day. I assume that the filter can handle the fan at full strength as they were paired together and the smell coming out of the exhaust seems fairly neutral I guess

If the fan is overpowering the filter then that's your problem. I'd check that after checking all connections if you can. In particular the light hood (they can suck some air in and bypass the filter).

I'm not sure the best method for leak checking the connections. How would I tell if the filter is being overpowered? Will get to this later today after sleep

Leak checking..idk...wet finger and see if you get a cold draught over it??
Slow the fan speed down if you have a controller and see if the smell disappears.

3 month old filter? How long do they last? Im going to try something similar with an added fan filter combo..

Filter inside tent, fan sticking halfway out of tent wall, but instead of pumping it back down to the basement right away ill exhaust to my room and then use another filter fan combo to pump the room air to basement if it gets to hot. Ill also have a room fan filter combo purifuing the ambient air, and only pump the room air into basement to vent high temps. 3 fan filter combos in all. Basement pumping fan filter will have 7ft extension tube so it pulls air from ceiling of room. Ill crack the window so when it extracts hot air cool comes in and also negative pressure in room (smell stays in side while windows allow cool air in) while heat exhaust is on. When it's not the second room fan filter combo refilters the tent air so its just another redundancy..

From Wal-Mart..
