SOG

Im planning to do a sea of green with like a 1-2 week veg (so I guess technically not a real sog)
Going to be doing it in 6” rockwool cubes.
Going to put 50 in a 4x4 flood table
I plan on using drippers
5x5x6.5 ft tent.
I’ve seen about 1g/1w.
If I’m using a 1000w mh/hps light And 50 plants in there, would I only be able to pull about 1 gram per watt? Of course I know it’s dependent on strain and environmental factors.
I’ll be able to control the humidity and temps in there, so that won’t be an issue.
My question is that if I’m using a 1000w mh/hps, would the most I be able to pull out of there is 1000 grams?
Do you think it’s possible to pull 1oz dry per plant without co2?
Realistically if everything was dialed in without co2, what would you expect to yield as a whole?
They would be clones and not seed.
I plan on taking clones that are about 6-7 inches tall.
Of course I’ll try to make sure the spacing between will be pretty close for each clone.
If there is anything I missed, let me know and I’ll answer what I can!

I have been running basically what you are describing for many years. Its a great way to grow. I don't have perfect temp and humidity controls, and that does effect things at certain times of year, but usually things stay just about perfect. Anyway, what you yield is going to be heavily dependant on the strain. I average about .75g/w with the strains I have currently, and have done close to 1g/w with other strains. Hell that was years ago, so I might be able to pull over 1 at this point if I had heavy yielders again.

One difference is I run my system as a perpetual garden with a mixture of strains all the time. I'm not really trying to max out the yield, but my quality stays A++.

Yeah man. I tried doing big trees, but I didn’t really get that much. Welll I did 4 big ones in coco and got about half pound with 8 week from seed.
I’m pretty sure I’ve talked to you lightly about this awhile back.
I figured there wouldn’t be hardly any larf doing this grow.
When it comes to nutrients, can you tell if you’re spending more or less on nutrients vs if you had big plants?
I was thinking about trying these nutes.
floraflex v1&2. B1&2
Nectar of the gods, Zeus juice
Hydroponic research, shine bloom additive.
Npk industries, raw silica
Elite 91 nutrients, roots
Calmag
Mykos and azos.
Lastly, I was wanting to try to add some compost tea or something like that with the rockwool cubes. Try to get a little Organics in there lol
Have you tried any compost teas or anything like that with your rockwool set up?

Honestly man, I don't use rockwool at all, I use pots of hyrdoton, which I guess is another difference between your plan and my grow that I didn't notice last night. I've never cared for taking clones in rockwool, and so I never tried growing in it. I know lots of guys have great results though.

I also don't use lots of bottles of different stuff. Over the years I tried lots of different things, and watched others try even more. I am very happy using a well balanced all around nutrient and maybe adding some mag-sulfate or cal-mag as needed. Cutting out all the extra additives greatly reduced my nutrient costs. In the end I think whether you have a couple big plants or a bunch of little plants they will drink similar amounts if you have similar bio-mass in the space.

I like little plants because I find them easier to trim, and they usually produce less larfy bud. I also don't spend much time vegging plants which saves money on 18 hour lights, and allows faster turn around.

Very true about the electricity. When I got my new bill I about shit myself lol then I was like something is wrong. Then started rallying up lights and I was like oh yeah the veg screwed me lol
Well damn. I should be starting that in a few weeks. Once I do, I’ll post a thread and let y’all see my goods and bads

I veg with t5 floro lights to help keep that cost down. Eventually I will probably switch over to LED.

Hi TF,
I'm always a sucker for a good SOG thread. Not doing it now...but did for a few years awhile back. Hydroton in small pots probably similar to what Thundercat is doing. I was very pleased with results. I had a super nice sativa leaning Whate Widow which took to SOG well...so I mono-cropped. Made life easier. Anyway...looking forward to seeing your grow TreeFiddy.

I’m going to read up a bit more on ppms and just hydro in general. I want to be prepared so I don’t waste mine or y’alls time lol it’ll def be something worth watching tho! I’m excited to start tho!

TF,
The one big difference between rtw cocco is the recirculating aspect. You have to avoid chemical interactions between the different nutes. So start your reading on res management. Or are you doing the rockwool run to waste also?
JD

PS I realized that nobody answered your light question. IMHO a 1000w is a little heavy for a 4x4 tray. You're talking over 60 watts/square foot. CO2 would probably be useful in such high intensity lighting. Your 1000 turn down to 750w? That would be about perfect.

As far as co2, im in a tent. I’ve heard to not use co2 if in a tent because it would use a lot more to see a profit in yield vs cost.
I was tempted on using the co2 bags, but not sure how those work/ if they even do to make it worth your time and money.
I was thinking about doing the rockwool drain to waste. I know it’ll run me a little more on nutrients, but right now I was thinking about doing that. I’ll def do some more research on reservoir maintenance.
Do you have any experience with the co2 bags?

Nope...I always just relied on air exchange to provide CO2. I'm curious as to how you are going to keep enough lamp clearance in a tent with a tray and a 1000w light. You got a 10' tall tent or what?
JD
I’m going to have the res outside of the tent and I’m going to sit the the tray on the floor (or something low to the ground) and I’ll use my shop vac to get the water out of the tray. I’m shooting for little run off tho

TF...I'm with you on your height management plan. But regarding runoff...rockwool can get toxic nutrient salt build-up just like coco...so even if you keep nutes low and keep the rockwool moist...might be a good idea to do a little weekly "maintenance" flush to prevent that...just a thought.

I appreciate the tip brotha! I’m currently doing some homework on the rockwool and hydroponic set up.
Yeah the height restriction is a pain in the ass lol I’ll be happy once I’m able to upgrade and not have neigh restrictions lol

Every time I try SOG my plants get too big. I can flower them at 8" tall and they always stretch a foot and get a foot wide. I'm still looking for the perfect strain to make it work. I had some low and slow growing plants that I thought would be perfect. They still got a foot wide and everything on the sides was crowded so only the colas were worth harvesting. If you can get 50 colas it should be a good crop. Good luck.

I've also done SOG for years. I use 1 gallon pots, kind of like half gallon milk cartons only a little taller and for nutrients I use Jacks 321, fulvic acid, recharge microbes and mamoth p. I have plastic holding trays that will fit 8 of the pots and put them on dollys with castors. It's nice for watering to be able to move them around easily. I can get eight trays in a 4 x 4 area so have 64 plants under 800 watts of LED light. That setup consistently yields close to 2 pounds per harvest. I start flowering at 8" but some strains do stretch a lot. I've found if I top them 3 or 4 times and pinch here and there it alleviates that issue. All in all I think SOG is a great option.

You started flowering when they were 8 inches tall? How big did you take clones?

stack em tighter, I've gone 42 in 0,75m squared. Several died as they were outcompeted by their sisters. Yields are really solid... they downside is you want to do this in a large room with good airflow in the driest season of the year for mold reasons.

I flower them at 7-8 inches too. Thats how most people run SOG. My clones are probably 4-5 inches and then veg for about 1-2 weeks depending on strain to build a nice root system in the hydroton. Then straight into flower, and they end up between 20-30 inches tall depending on strain as well.

I like sog for the quick turn around. However keeping enough moms can be a pain of your right for space. @Thundercat how many moms do you keep per run of 50 plants ?
