Soil Moisture

I've see alot of the plants with the soil covered with plastic, foil etc.. This is to keep in the moisture right? Would pebbles work ....white for reflection maybe?

if they are too heavy it can compact the dirt, but yeah thats the point of covering the tops.

Im using a layer of hydroton,seems to work great.

maybe use perlite
