Speed controller for Dayton blower?

My first post here on RIU.

First off...many thanks to all of you here on the forums. I've learned a TON by reading through various threads over the past six months or so.

Anyways...I'm wondering - has anyone successfully used a speed controller with a Dayton "squirrel-cage" type exhaust fan?

I already have a variac (which I use successfully with an S&P TD-100x INLINE fan)...and a "Speedster" fan speed controller. I'd just like to find out if speed control is a possibility with this Dayton fan before I shell out $80+ for it.

The one I had in mind can be found here:

http://www.hydroponics.net/i/248053

(btw...as far as I can tell, Greentrees Hydoponics has some of the best prices on common growing supplies. Not the lowest price I've found for this particular fan, but I've bought lots of other supplies from them).

I've found hints on other (non-grower) websites that suggest that maybe this speed controller would work:

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/DART-CONTROLS-Adjustable-Speed-AC-Motor-Control-5JJ60

However, several documents I've found elsewhere (for example: http://www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/dayton_blower.htm) suggest that "Dayton Blowers are not recommended for speed control." This same website also lists a number of available speed controllers for shaded pole or PSC blowers (http://www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/kbwc.htm). As far as I can tell, the Dayton 1TDR3 would fit into this category.

So...anyone have any experience with this particular exhaust fan? Or suggestions for a different fan (squirrel-cage type...NOT inline fan)? I'm just looking for one that performs well against relatively high static pressures (i.e., pulling through several layers of filters). This one seems to meet my requirements, but I'd like to be able to run it at lower speeds if/when it gets too loud.

Thanks in advance.

No answers?

Well, anyways...I'm looking at modifying a Stanley blower instead. At least that one has three speeds already, so no need for a separate speed controller. Not planning to use it for a grow...will be constructing some sort of room air purifier by putting the blower in a box with a HEPA furnace filter on the inlet side(s) and some kind of ducting from the exhaust port out into the room. As far as I could tell from my research, it MIGHT be possible to vary the speed of the Dayton blower with a controller, but I'm not willing to gamble $80+ on that chance when I can try the Stanley blower first (for $46 from amazon).

I plan to use my S&P TD-100x inline fan hooked up to a variac for my grow cab. Still in the planning stages on that one. The cab will be constructed from a U-Haul cardboard wardrobe box. I have most of the materials gathered (250w CMH bulb and ballast for lighting). First step will be to modify my old 150w HPS Sun System hood for connection to 4" ducting. Hopefully sometime early this year I can post a build and/or grow journal. Mother plants are living comfortably in their own cab (also a wardrobe box - under CFLs) until I'm closer to having the flowering box ready. Stay tuned...:leaf:
