Hello Everyone!!!

First time grower here! Need some advice…

I planted my seeds, from bag weed, about 2 months ago. The first month or so I had some teething problems, I wasn’t giving them enough light, and then I was also watering them too much. I started with six plants and now I’m down to three.

My tallest one is 7 inches and they are on 18hrs light. I’m using those curly queue florescent light bulbs that replace regular light bulbs. I have three of them, 100 watt each, pointed at my plants. They are planted in Scotts planting soil and I haven’t started feeding them yet. I read some where that if you use planting soil you don’t need to feed for a few months.

I think I’m on track now, but have a few questions… First off, considering their rough start, how do you think they look? Second, they’re growing like crazy, but not getting any branches, so I’m wondering if I should snip a bit off the top, or should I wait a bit longer?

Then yesterday I noticed the one in the back, the tallest one, is getting little hairs where the leaf stem meets the main stem. Is this a female? Sorry I tried to take pictures of the hairs but my camera isn’t that good and they don’t show up. The other two have very small balls in the same place. Are they males? If so then I’m confused because I didn’t think you could tell the sex until they started flowering… Do I have freakaziod plants?

Let me know what you think and any advice is welcomed. Please keep in mind I’m on a tight budget. Don’t want to spend a bunch of money just to have dead plants and not to mention money is tight at the moment.

Thanks
Sianna

The ones with hairs are female and the ones with balls are males.
Yes you can tell in veg the sex.
They are streched out, you need the cfls closer but not so close the leafs start to curl.
I would not clip them at all I would leave them be.

get a fan on those plants.. those stems are dinky.. they are also seriously stretched and tiny for 2 months.. what spectrum are your cfl bulbs? are you growing in a box? if you only have a few bulbs for 3 plants you need them in a box where the light can be more concentrated.. like Golden said.. balls are males and hairs are females.. they show pre flowers during veg... your plants also need nutes.. in soil you should be feeding them around 2-3 weeks.... so some research around on this site.. its great to learn how to grow

Thanks for the input!!!

Wow I didn’t realize you could tell the sex of the plants so early. I’ve read so many posts where people aren’t sure what sex their plants are and they’re getting ready to go into the flowering stage.

A few weeks ago I realized they weren’t getting enough light because they seemed to stop growing, and three plants died, plus I was over watering. I moved my plants from the floor onto boxes to get them closer to the lights and increased the time from 12hrs to 18hrs. Since then the plants started growing like crazy. With that in mind I did expect that they might be small compared to plants that started off with the correct lighting.

I’m not sure I can get them much closer to the lights with my current set up unless I put the plants next to the lights as apposed to under the lights. I’ve attached some more pics so you can see my set up. Let me know if anyone has any ideas for improvement.

As to a few bulbs for three plants… I think now that I’ve confirmed which ones are males/females and I will be down to one plant, two of them are male. :(

Sylvania12, sorry I’m not sure what a “spectrum” is… :-? Is that the color of the light? What I can tell you is I’m using three GE Energy smart bulbs, they are actually 26 watts, which equals 100 watts of a regular bulb, and they have 1750 lumens each.

I will get a fan in there today! I assume I should start off with the fan a little further away and maybe only on for a short period of time, like an hour or two, then increase over time? I don’t want to knock my only girl over….

I will research nutrients and start feeding them soon.

Again thanks for the advice, I don’t really know what to expect, and what is normal and if my girl is on track. At this point I want to keep it simple, keep her alive, and hopefully have a little something decent to smoke in the end. With my next girls I can up the ante a bit after I’ve learned the basics.

Cheers!

yeah, you dont have enough light of them and they can be even closer... research like Y adapters for cfls.. you need a new light set up if you gunna get anything outta this grow.. also when your using such little lighting you should have built a grow box to keep those lights more consitrated on the plants.. yes slowly get the fan closer.. your stems should start to thicken up.. with more lighting on the plants you'll start to get more foiliage.. im gunna gather up a couple of links for you to look at to get an idea..

Thanks for the info and the links, I appreciate it!!! I’m a visual person so the seeing the pics really helped.

I think I can make this work and will be going to Home Depot or Lowes in the next few days to see what I can find.
