Still Have Far To Go

Dear Gary,

Thank you for contacting to express your support for efforts to expand the legal usage of marijuana. I appreciate your thoughts on this issue.

I understand that some people support marijuana decriminalization for medicinal and recreational purposes. Marijuana is chemically complex, and some have called for studies to determine potentially useful medicinal effects. I am opposed to the recreational use of marijuana, but recognize that certain components of marijuana - namely cannabidiol (CBD), could serve as effective treatments for some diseases and conditions.

While I generally have concerns about altering the definition of marijuana and allowing further access to its components, clinical data released in recent years suggests that small amounts of CBD can have therapeutic benefits and that it does not have the potential for abuse. CBD comes from an extremely low tetrahydracannabinol (THC) strain of hemp, which reduces the hallucinogenic and disorienting effects of typical marijuana.

The Georgia State Legislature passed legislation in April 2015 allowing certain seriously ill patients to possess cannabis oil made up of CBD to treat limited medical conditions. Over 1300 patients in Georgia are now part of the state registry. You may be interested to know that I voted in favor of an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2016 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Act last Congress which prohibited the use of funds to take any action preventing a state from implementing laws to possess, distribute, or use cannabidiol oil. This amendment recognized Georgia’s decision to allow for the use of cannabidiol in certain circumstances for medical reasons.

In 2016, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rejected changing marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule II drug, based largely on FDA scientific findings. The DEA has not issued a new ruling on the issue.

While I do not support the recreational use of marijuana, rest assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind should the House consider legislation related to CBD or marijuana use in the future.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please continue keeping me informed of the issues that are important to you. Sincerely,

Doug Collins
Member of Congress

I received this response from my local Congressman-I've been attempting to get Doug to look at CURRENT information on the benefits of cannabis. This is his standard response.

The Bible Belt states will be the very last to "bend" to the will of the people. On pot or anything else related to civil liberties. They're the vanguard for anti-abortion, pro-10 Commandments in courts and schools. Most backward region in a backward country.
and still, I rise...

Yeah, Collins is a hard core Republican in a hard core Republican district. Are you surprised?

You are at the forefront of the movement in a difficult area for this issue. Hang in there brother and don't give Collins any peace on this issue. Thanks for taking the fight to them.

Or maybe when he writes that certain 12 year olds are at the age of consent.

Naw, nobody would be that fucking stupid.

Just you.

Are you saying that "age of consent" means that there is an age where every person is granted the ability to consent ?

Isn't it ironic that you also think this grant can come from the organization which is the biggest abuser of consent too?

I know you want to talk about 12 year olds, but there's more to this consent thing than your constant Aqua Lung mimicry.

Let's just cover them all until a higher age to be sure creepy bastards that take advantage of them are held responsible.

Speaking of creepy bastards, how the fuck are ya? Do your taxes yet?

Oh hello. I thought you might be out forcing prostitutes to serve you, thank you for weighing in with your thoughtful commentary.

I share your concern with forcing nonconsenting people into sexual relationships. Are you ready to say a hooker should be able to refuse service to a potential customer based on her/his own reasoning or are you gonna keep advocating for rape?

Rob Roy shows up and just shits on threads. I don't know why but that's what he does. This one didn't even make it past the first page before he had a major diarrhea event on it. Too bad too. It started out with a real honest to god thread that applied to pot growing AND politics.

Rob gets this way this time every year because he doesn't like doing his taxes.

Suck it up Rob. You live here. Pay your taxes. If you like, grow your shit weed and leech off your neighbor's refrigerator because your DIY electrical system that you boasted about doesn't really work. Pay the man whether you like it or not and leave us out of your miserable life.

Oh yeah and children cannot consent to have sex with you. Children cannot consent to have sex. They aren't able to understand the consequences. Get anywhere near my kids and we won't have to hear your rants any longer at RIU.

Nice conflation job bonehead.

I'm the one who keeps asking you why you don't think individual consent is a necessary thing. Don't many of the things you want government to do rely on destroying consent of individual people ? Guess consent doesn't matter to you, as the evidence clearly points out.
