Stunted seedlings...

So normally I've got no isssues with the whole start to finish, but this run has me scratching my head as I'm trying a couple things for the first time.

I've got 5 seedlings cracked Feb 10th in a paper towel then transfered to Rapid Rooters in a styrofoam float tray with a humidity dome and a heating mat underneath. Had a surplus of HPS bulbs with one grow each, so decided to use one of em for the duration being that one seed is an Auto, so I got 400w HPS about 24" from the babies. Temps have stayed 74-78 during the 20 on, and drop to around 60 during 4 off, but the heating mat stays on constant.

All 5 seedlings came out of the rooters on day 2 or 3, but haven't advanced from there. They're on day 11 now, and not a one has shown a tap root through the plug, nor have they passed the cotyledon stage (slight first leaves [single blade] showing but not nearly as far along as any past seedlings).

My first thought is that I'm keeping the rooters a bit too wet, as there's a slight bit of algae growth on the tops of the plugs. I was under the impression that you couldn't really over-wet them as the tray is meant to float, thus always keeping them as wet as they'll absorb? New to the plugs though so not sure. These things really all they're cracked up to be?

Only other thing I can think of is they're just not as vigorous under the HPS. First time I've tried to veg under anything other than cool blue spectrum (usually Flouros) so not sure?

Advice on either subject is appreciated.

Take the HPS away from your new borns and give them cfls, they should be only getting moderate light untill they have at least 2-3 nodes with some roots poking around.

Like the guy somewhere above me said..

If someone said 'hey, you can 'sprout' under any light you want.. just name it.. It's on me..

Up to a point.. the standard 2- 3 dollar, 24-28 watt 6500k CFL is real hard to beat.

I love them.... i would marry them if they would let me.

K, I've since transplanted into 1 gal smart pots as I didn't like how wet the plugs were staying, was getting scared of damping off when a closer look determined one developed a thin stem from the base of the plug into the hole punched in top. Also moved them to 110w of mixed spectrum fluros until they show me a bit of love. I believe I'll stick with fluros in the future for the initial veg stages, as I agree, I think the HID was a little overkill. Soon as I can get to the grow shop I'll get some more bulbs.

You don't need domes or heat mats for seedlings already cracked, heat mats are for clones.

400w HPS about 24" from the babies
Too early for a light that size, use a 150w or cfls.

the cfls you need can be bought any general store like walmart. The 6500k is what you need. You dont need to go get the expensive ones at a grow shop. When they get a bit bigger in veg i would use a MH bulb. Im sorry I have never used the plugs you are talking about so i cant give any thoughts on that. Is the 1 gal pot the biggest your going?

You can keep rapid rooters too wet. I use them in Burpee self-watering coco starter trays to keep just the right amount of moisture. You really can't beat them for cloning, IMO. I start my seeds in them too, but I don't think they are as important for seeds. I get a little green algae on the tops of mine sometimes and it really doesn't seem to matter.

Digin, What was you strongest hypothesis as to why they were stunted?
I have tomatoes and peppers that are stunted, I am using a 400 W. MH 2' away.
Temps are holding at 72F, I used vermi tea to water believing the ph would be self adjusted by the worms.
Wondering is it the light, the worm tea, or the little fruit flies (not many).
I'll move the MH further away and it should replicate the moderate light Klass suggests, actually I already did.
