Teens at California school getting high on medical marijuana

SAN DIEGO -- Officials at the Grossmont Union High School District have sent letters home to parents, notifying them that a number of students have been caught on campus with medical marijuana cards.

District official Catherine Martin said they are concerned over the growing trend and the "apparent ease" with which teens are able to obtain the cards.

In the letters, parents, students and faculty are reminded that even if the cards are valid, it is against the law to have marijuana on school property.

Recently two East County teenagers were suspended for showing up at school high, with a medical marijuana card as their excuse, NBC 7/39 reported.

During a series of recent undercover sting operations, district attorney investigators identified four or five local doctors who are issuing cards or prescriptions without proper exams or follow up medical care.

Mission Valley is one location where officials said illegal drug trafficking has taken place.

San Diego District Attorney Narcotic Chief Damon Mosler told NBC 7/39 a bogus symptom and some cash is all a teenager needs to obtain a medical marijuana card.

There are always people out there who abuse a good thing and ruin it for people that really need it. Had a medical marijuana patient in my state that got busted for selling to undercover cops. She had over 47 lbs. in her house and more then $7000 made from her medical sales. Stupid bitch.

47 lbs. would have made the volunteers at the local compassion center wet their pants. LOL

so i went to the health department to get my state card. there is a space on the application for minors. apperently with an adult guardian signature a minor can get a card. this is a guess because i did not ask directly about it. but it was on the form.

Minors have terrible diseases too. Doctors have them loaded with drugs. Gives them an option.

I am dissapointed to see stupid teens in the school system, as if they would try and say they had medical marijuana cards... I hate people who ruin a good thing for everyone.

What some of you do have to realize is that the teenagers in question wouldn't have gotten the cards in the first place had the damn government ended drug prohibition. These teens, like every other stoner out there, were just looking for a way around the government so they can use marijuana. Don't blame the teens, blame the source of the problem. The government.

no i blame the teens, there fucking stupid. Government is trying to do a good thing by distributing a Medical substance. Those teens should of been smart about it, even if someone thinks you high DENEY IT MORONS unless they see you toking it they got Nothing on you. i toked everyday threw highschool. You just have to be smart, not a fucking retard. like some teens ive heard about

If people have the card they have an expressed need for the card and state government needs to put its foot down on schools blatant disregard for basic rights. I approached the district board with a lawyer to report the disregard for rights such as freedom of speech and expression as well as a plethora of other inexcusable offenses. Suffice to say you may now wear anything in that school provided it isnt outwardly sexual, overly exposing, or of a predjudice nature.

I also organized our first school walk-out protest.

Would you rather these kids have found a fake ID, and get drunk all the time instead? There's no doubt this incident will cause some to question the availability of medical cannabis, but not enough that CA will ever consider repealing medical cannabis. When it comes down to it, it really doesn't matter what these ignorant idiots think anyway. The people of CA knew damn well that healthy people would be getting medical weed when they passed Prop 215, over 12 years ago. We were tired of watching peaceful people being locked up for nothing, and eating up taxpayer money in jail, for a harmless plant.

I got high in high school all the time personally, off better weed than was available in the med clubs. In fact, my 1st period teacher senior year called me "Bano Boy" (Bathroom boy in spanish) because I'd get a restroom pass every morning and toke up right outside the class. At least I was in control of myself, my buddies who liked to drink would be crude, belligerent, and damn near incoherent sometimes. Kids are going to use intoxicants, it's a damned fact of life. I'd rather them have medical cards for pot than fake IDs for alcohol.

These clubs and doctors that cater to underage and unqualified, are the first to be located and shutdown by the feds, by the way.

damn right man.....my best excuse was i didnt get any sleep the night before...it works every time.....also gives a good excuse for the red eyes...lol....another thing......i smoke every day but i at least wait until i get out of class before i do it.....but i kinda have to....im in college with a biology major.....hard shit...lol...the easiest way to get out of being high at school is not to be high at school....and always deny it!....

lol, im not complaining but when i went to get my card, the doctor was almost leading me into what i should say to get my card, on another note my for real dr cant write a script for pot cuz she is employed by the rez and they are federally funded and they would fire her, she says she would but for that fact.so i gotta pay a charlatan 150 bucks so i wont be a criminal. next thing ya know monsanto is gonna own all the genetics to marijuana

While I think that if you are under the age of Majority "21" you should not be able to smoke marijuana. It seems ridiculous that high school kids could legally get marijuana. I think booze and weed both need to be monitored by parents if they deem it appropriate to consume these mood altering substances. Either way these kids should go in for mandatory substance abuse counseling to give them a second chance.

Don't forget about anti-depressants, they're all the rage here in the US... never mind they DOUBLE suicide rates in teens.

I've never heard of a marijuana related suicide.
