Texas House Bill 548 - CLICK HERE

"Legislation seeking to reduce marijuana possession penalties has been reintroduced in the Texas House of Representatives. House Bill 548 amends Texas law so that the adult possession of up to one ounce of marijuana is reduced from a Class B misdemeanor (punishable by 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine) to a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine not exceeding $500 and no criminal record.

Marijuana arrests, mostly possession arrests, now comprise over half of all arrests in Texas. According to 2009 state arrest data, more than 97 percent of all Texas marijuana arrests -- over 77,000 people -- are for possession only. Passage of this bill would bring immediate relief to hundreds of thousands of Texans who consume marijuana responsibly, and would allow law enforcement officials to reallocate resources toward targeting and prosecuting more serious criminal activity." - NORML

There's a link on the page to contact your local representative. Let's get this going.

Of course. Feel free to post to your Facebook/Twitter/etc.

The only way this will pass is if we get word out!

I support this bill as well. The fact that half the arrests are for marijuana shocks me. Perhaps it is time to look at the effect of legalization of marijuana and how much it could save the state in court fees and other fees related to these arrests.

Alright, they've had a hearing and the youtube video can be seen here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xchBYEoXkQ

It NEEDS your support, so put down the pipe and do something. I know many of you watch this and think, well, that'd be cool if it passed. MAKE IT HAPPEN!!! This bill is on it's way to the House if we can show our support for it. From there it's got a real chance of passing.

Give the committee members a call! If you don't want to talk to anyone, call after hours and leave a voicemail. Let them know that in your local town, Possession of Marijuana gets you a stiffer fine and punishment than a DWI charge. Let them know you've been denied financial aid because it's a blemish on your criminal record. Let them know that your life has been permanently affected because of the War on Drugs.

Can someone give me more info on this. Im talking about who supports it and voting for them etc. get at me. Ill do some research tomorrow

Not to mention when someone considers Real Estate out that way. Statistics reflect a crime when there was no real crime other then taking in some nature.

This would be nice but check out the history every year someone suggests a bill every year it fails to even get out of committee :/

They won't even consider it, someone needs to do a financial study and the possible benefits to the state budget (seeing as it was brutally hacked up after texas' debt :/ already 49th in state education and they cut the budget more. *sigh

But let's try :)
