The Dreaded Budrot

Checking them out yesterday and noticed the first signs of BR on a couple colas at the top of the plants. Seems to only affect one pheno of this strain. Really not much to do about it, but to select harvest. Plenty of air circulation around the buds, just too dense for the conditions by the coast I suppose.

1st pheno has the issues (pics 1-3)

2nd pheno still looking good (pics 4-6)

Minor, yes. Problem is within a few days it can spread spores all over.

As for strain...just something I've been working with that has no name other than 'volunteers' to date. Long story

yup their poop causes bud rot...
if i were u i would go through my buds really good and look for caterpillars

that shit will spread mad fast.

try and quarintine it, if not then you will have to harvest. looks good tho.

No caterpillars here. Botrytis C is the culprit. Most likely from high humidity/coastal AM fog. After the sun was out for 3 hours there was still moisture on the heavy colas. Will start giving them a good shake every AM and see what happens. So far only 1 plant is showing signs and only on the top 10-15%. Nipped it in the bud so we'll have to see.

beautiful plants, bud rot and caterpillars are the worst...

It seems like budrot is more common these days. I had to harvest 3 BigBuds a month early due to this. I still got some nice smoke

I had giagantic buds last year with bud rot and everywhere there was bud rot there were worms or signs of worms. Seems like it affected the biggest baddest buds on the very tips the most. I kicked myself for not harvesting earlier. This was toward the end of October though. Seems a little early for bud rot now. I caught a worm the other day, It chewed through the stem about 3 inches from the tip of one of my biggest buds and the bud was falling over, I cut off the bud and on the inside was no bud rot yet just worm poop everywhere.

So....did you throw out all of the affected buds or try to save as much as you could? Poop and all?

I keep getting dead woody looking spots on my branches then a greyish brown powdery stuff on that spot,next thing is the branch dies and the bud rots!!! What causes this,I also am on the coast DAMN FOG!!! I tried shaking the wet off my plants then fanned them dry with a piece of plywood,time consuming and still lost a bunch !!!!!!!

I have been using BT monthly and I went out last night and saw a catapillar about 1/2 inch in size...very small. I have also seen a lot of moths out at night so I will be spraying every 2 weeks until harvest....little buggers love the herb!

You have the same issue I do. It's the cool temps, usually below 60f and the high humidity where Botrytis thrives. That grey/brown powder are the spores and will travel by air or water. Best thing to do is remove the affected areas carefully. Keep a paper bag with you to put the buds in so the spores won't spread. Cut the affected area out and dab the stem with some H2O2 on a Qtip. Hang and dry.

If you want more info on this pathogen do a search of Botrytis. You'll find plenty of info on it as it also affects grapes in a major way.

You're welcome.

Yes, genetics play a part to an extent. Some breeders will select traits for pathogen resistance. Powdery Mildew and Boytrytis to name a couple. Same as grape/strawberry growers. Some choose to live with the problem and address it during the cycle with chemicals. Myself, I delete any pheno that does not show pathogen resistance, or try to X it with one that does show resistance (harder to do and much more time consuming) until you find the right mix. This is impossible in some cases, and not worth the time/energy in many.

I work in the Masonry trade and we work at alot of the wineries in Sonoma County. One of these vinyard owners is Richard Kunde, he created the disease free vine and made a fortune from it. If this is possible with grapes shouldnt it work on Cannibus???

Exactly! The problem is, in the grape industry there's a ton of legit $ being made that can be spent legit in a lab with all the hitech equipment being utilized. They can break down the plant DNA and select breed from this list. That takes all the guess work, or at least the majority of it, out of the selection process for Xing.

Now to the pot grower/breeder. We are stuck with old school pick and choose methods. You could be doing great into the F3 selection process and screw up with 1 mistake that will send back to the beginning. That puts 3 years of time wasted from 1 mistake. Get the picture? You have to do it for the love of the plant, not the possible fortune, if there is one to be made.

Ahhh Budrot. The true downfall or an Outdoor Growing Season. Got the first signs of it on my girl. Im clipping out the brown spots and am hoping it stops to spread.

Then in a perfectly looking cola from the outside and one pull at the top and there's a little caterpillar munching on my stem and pooping every where. Cut the top off and salvaged about 3/4 of that branch.

I think bud rot for me is caused by night rain and the water sitting on the low spots of my buds/branches and collecting. Rot seems to originate from those stagnate water spots. If only I could shake it every morning!!

Anyways, damn nice looking plants there man. Hope the bud rot doesn't spread.

Hey BLT,Theres supposed to be a light rain here 2nite,I went out and put a large black construction trash bag over my last GDP. With the humidity so high here is that a BAD idea???
