The Swag Grow Archives v. 0.5

Welcome fellow RIU'ers to my first grow. I'm labeling it the 0.5 grow because I am using simple bagseeds from pressed mids and mostly want to see if the importance of optimum environmental/handling conditions compared to the the genetics of the plant and the final end product. The seeds had tiger strips though if that counts for anything . There 10 days old in the pictures since breaking the surface (3-30-11). Check the specs :hump:

Lighting: Each plant (3) has it's own 2x 27 watt 3500k CFL along with 2x t8 tube 32 watt 3500k fluoros on a metal ballast with built in reflector

Medium: Soil - Fox Farm Ocean Forest

Water: Distilled

Air Circulation: 2x Honeywell 3 Speed Air Circulator

Nutrients/Additives: Fox Farm Big Grow, Big Bloom, Tiger Bloom (Not in use as of now)

Temperature/Humidity: 82-84F/ 40-50%

Questions/Concerns: The ridges of the edges of the leafs on all 3 plants are curling upwards and turn a yellow color along the edges that gradually moves inwards and has turned a lot of the leaves into a lime green yellowish color. Any info on the cause of the problem would be much appreciated

Awe I posted pics and everything and still no one can lend some assistance to my situation :(. Anyone even care to constructively criticize my small grow-op, any advice on what I could do to improve it? I plan on using 2 150w HTG HPS ballasts for flowering and getting some MH conversion bulbs for the rest of veg'ing so 300watt HID's for 3 plants seems OK since I've read its supposed to be 100 watt per plant. Is it high expectations for around an ounce out of each female? They appear to be all indica dominant so I'm hoping that its a good possibility :D. My dimension for the room is 5'Hx5'Wx2'L. Think this is enough space to grow each plant to about 3ft?

Nothing more than some bagseed. If it some how turned out to be some solid genetics than I'll most likely take a cutting of it and maybe have a go at creating my own hybrid strain. Though that probably won't happen, the herb I collected the seeds from was not of high quality to say the least. It was the kind of wet mexican brick bud, wet from improper harvesting and curing though not trichomes :(

That was the goal of the grow, to hopefully show that environmental factors exceed the importance of the genetic ones. Reason why I shall be upgrading to 300 watts of MH/HPS soon. :)

Thanks mate I've put them through some stress though so I'm hoping they don't hermie on me. Probably am going to pickup some Reverse just in case before flowering. I still need to know what the holes are in the leaves as I feel whatever it causing them is definetly slowing down the growth of the plants... I checked the bottom of the leaf for spider mites but I can't tell if what I'm looking at is a spidermite or small pieces of soil

Spider mites are really really small get something to magnify them so you can see easier. Usually you will notice webs before you notice spider mites. At least that's how it usually works when I have found them.

I noticed what looked like a small white thread coming out of a node and I saw another one some where else along a leaf. I have a magnifying glass I've been looking at them with, not sure what the magnification is but I don't see the little black specks on the bottom of the leaf move. Though I did see a small white looking thread coming out of a node and one sort of similar floating in the wind on a leaf. Could that possible be the webbing? I heard they make the webing in between the holes but I didn't see any sign of it. Can holes in the plant be caused by a cal/mag deficiency? I'm using Fox Farm Ocean Forest with distilled water which I don't think should be causing that problem this early in the grow but I have no other ideas what else it could be :wall:

UPDATE: It's been 4 weeks and 3 days since they've broken soil, updated pics below of how they are going thus far :). I've been feeding them 2 tsp. Tiger Bloom diluted in a gallon of distilled water recently about every other or so watering because my Grow Big is long past expired and I need to pick up some more, at least for my second grow of fem'd seeds (GHS White Widow, BB Blue Cheese, Dinafem Blue Hash). I recently changed the location of the plants to a new smaller closet with some mylar put up in the background and a home made CO2 system using a 2 liter soda bottle mixed with some yeast, sugar, and water. They seem to be doing just fine except for some yellow at the bottom leaves which I believe is from lack of light and possible the beginning of nitrogen deficiency, as yellowing has began to occur on the edges of some of the fan leaves. I also got this week a 4" inline fan and 250 watt HPS from HTG along with 3 new bags of FFOF for each plant. I am currently holding off on flowering as I am waiting for my 150 watt HPS to arrive in about week and than the flowering shall begin! Can only hope at least one of them will be a healthy female to reward me for my time and effort put into them. Anyways enough of my jabbering and on to the pictures!

Questions/Concerns: I was hoping to flower the plants to no more than 3 feet (any higher and I think the HPS's would burn them). Will I need a 5 gallon pot to "properly" grow them to their full potential or can I skimp on the size of the container and get a 3 gallon?

yes, a 5 gallon bucket would be really nice.

i dont understand stomething..you have a 250w hps but you're waiting for the 150w?
what do you want to run for these 3 plants? 250w or 150w ?

Both :) That way it is only 1,000 lumens short of a 400 watt which I heard is a minimum to produce outdoor sized comparable buds. I had the 150 watt from a previous grow attempt but never ended up using it as I noticed pollen sacks developing on the plant after switching it to 12/12 before I even had hooked up the ballast (150 watt). My only concern as of now is whether or not the 4" line fan I have will be able to produce enough air intake to cool the closet I'm using which is 6' Hx5'Wx3'L. The suction of air seems be a lot more powerful than the air it pulls into the room so I ended up hooking the carbon filter with it to the out-take part. Though I recently read the filter is suppose to be hooked up to the intake for proper odor control which is my main reason for purchasing it. Will the air pushed into the grow room along with the carbon filter be able to mask the odor of the plants or would it just be better to reverse the way I have it currently? The filter where air is being pulled through is attached to air ducting that leads to a hole in the ceiling that allows for new air to enter into the carbon filter.

Sorry for the delayed response and thanks too Harvey. Been swamped with RL issues lately so haven't had much time to post as much as just skim around the site. Anyways its late in my neck of the woods and I need to get to sleep, not that many of you care what I have to type regardless. A quick items check on my grow atm. 250 Watt HPS, 4x26 watt 3600k CFL's, 4" Inline Fan, 4 Gallon Pots filled with FFOF (and marijuana of course), 2 Honeywell Fans, 1 DIY Co2 Generator, and Mylar background. Picss below enjoy :).
