If you're trying to keep a mother plant around, there's no reason for it to take up a lot of space. I see some crazy big/overgrown mother plants on here, kinda pointless for a home grower imo. You can keep them really small for a long time by vigorously pruning above and below ground. You might be able to bend those side branches about the height of the other plants, and cut the main branch. Pinch the side branches super hard between your index finger and thum and twist the branch back and forth with your other hand while bending down. pinch as hard as you can with one hand while bending with the other.
