topping question

I've just topped my plants after the fourth node, headed for my second scrog. My first grow was topped maybe twice and within the last 15 days before flower, probably a mistake...For this grow I'd like to get a little clearer on the subject.
1) Should i only be topping the tops or, should I be topping everything below as well as it progresses?
2) When topping do i skip a node then re-top?
3) How much of a extension do i need above the node before topping (is there a general rule, .25-.5 inch)?
My latest plants were topped just above the node, almost leaving no growing stem extension above the remaining branched fan leaves.

Thanks for any help

The actual strategy of fimming(topping) is developed for each growers individual situation, me and most others fim/top at the 4th lateral unless its an auto, then fim/top the 2nd lateral, some wait another month then top again, I do, and use them in the cloner, again its up to you

Usually we just cut the main and then the new growth from those cuts/toppings.peace.If you want a bush, top early and if you have more height, after the sixth node,cut/top it at the fourth node...been drinking tonight....but yeah!

Thanks Vostok, appreciate the knowledge

For me, the main reason of topping is to even out the canopy. There are many ways to do that such as supercropping, LST, screens, etc. I like to top the main stalk from the 6th node down to the 4th node. I will let the two new branches grow another 4 nodes and cut each down to 2 nodes. At that point my side branches will catch up with the main tops. I end up with 8 top colas all at the same height without doing a lot of tying, screening, supercropping etc.

I usually check for mistakes but fuck it.....looks good to me.

My advice was good though....
Most times,i top at the second true node, after the first serrated, single bladed pot leaf. That way my side branching from the cut grows up past the initial cut to create a good bushy plant....I hope I'm making sense...done with advise tonight:)

Thanks Althor, really appreciate the sound advice. You learn something new everyday (hopefully). Heading in with the scissors tonight to finish up my un-topped ladies.

-Typically you want to top the plant at 10 in. just once
-Assuming that, the trellis is placed at +/- 25 inches above the plant. trim all useless undergrowth as soon as the top of the plant hits the trellis.
-That way the plant will begin to divert most energy to the top colas as soon as it gets trimmed
