It is done on clones to help the plant focus on roots and not leaves. I don't touch the leaves unless I have a couple big ones touching each other and staying wet all day. I also remove yellow leaves.

I tried an experiment with two identical clones of LA Confidential. I removed fan leaves from one flowering cola to provide more light. The other plant's cola doubled in size over the next month. Leaves are the power.
