IMO those lines make a lot more sense when you (or your elder males) are not being systematically kept out of the economic opportunities that your fellow citizens are able to access.
Again, I'm at a loss. With all due respect, I don't remember being kept out of an economic opportunity. I've made a good wage through out my career, starting off as a union bricklayer in 1962 making $7.50 and hr. That was more that the college grad made. I applied for a govt grant to go to college in the evenings, eventually getting an engineering degree. I've played the stock market, made a few bucks. 401K was another great opportunity to make some good money, most of it was tax free at that. The opportunity is there, just go for it.
Or as an after thought; Perhaps I'm not getting it. Either way, I'm living the life of leisure, retired and loving it.

1962 was generally not the same for everyone (just going off of your avatar though) opportunity wise.

I am not hating on you working hard and building a nice stable life, I have a lot of respect for that. I guess I was more pointing out that the experiences of others is not always the same.

Agree, some of us have made very good decisions, others have not. I'm one of those that has made some bad decisions, but it's like getting thrown from a horse, just climb back into the saddle. We the people must and are obliged to care for ourselves and family first and foremost. In my opinion, if the majority buckled down and sought a better life by using our God given gumption and brain to advance ourselves, in leu of complaining about how the bird of paradise has taken a dump on us, then we as a country would become "united" , not "divided".
OK, now that I've had my philosophical rant for the day, I think I'll fire up the rest of the LA Amnesia, drink another cup of black coffee and go for a run with my bulldog.

The best decision you made was being born with privilege. Great job Gary!

Yeah, 5 siblings and a dad that worked in a factory.
So Mr. Know-it-all, explain to me what I'm not getting, the fact you are having a miserable life. It is your call.
My life is great. I’m probably in a better financial position than you are.

Unlike you though, I don’t believe succeeding in a system designed for my benefit makes me all that smart.

Like I said, dumb fucks like you will never get it. Fogdog tried to tell you, It’s not about you.

So Mr. Know-it-all, you still have not explain to me what I'm not getting, besides the fact you are having a better financial position then I.

Little things like having to drive for an hour because all the good jobs are not located in places that you are able to live due to things like redlining and using a freeway system to cut off minority communities while having thousands of police in those small pocket areas to make sure that those occasional bad decisions end up in criminal records that stop your ability to do things like get a loan to obtain a education. These add up over generations man, it is just the reality.

The majority of humans do buckle down and work hard. Unfortunately too often for people who have been suppressed in our nation that doesn't mean they are able to build on their successes like they should have been able to.

Ok, so clue me in. Or is it perhaps that during the years I was wise enough to put a few bucks back, called a savings. Is it a political thing, or which president presided over our nation, no it is not. Just perhaps you are one of those that would rather the govt' take care of you. From the backbone I received growing up, we were taught to take care of ourselves as well as out family. As a very famous man once said, "ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country", incidentally, I voted for that man and cried when he was killed.
Clue for the clueless: generational economic and civil rights suppression by well to do white men of just about anybody else.

OK, I'll clue you in. You say you are 76, and now you say you voted for JFK in 1960.

The voting age was 21 in 1960, so that means that you are over 80 years old now.

Or more appropriately, completely clueless!

Or just full of shit.

and can you believe FMW is $7.25 non-union in 2021? 60 years no change.

same as it ever was..same as it ever was.

your 'tax-free' investment earnings were not that; you have to pay taxes at some point or opt for ROTH.

additionally, the 401(k) was the Federal fix for companies who would Enron your pension.

How true, having said that, if one would wait until they retire, making a much smaller wage derived from Social Security, the tax rate is way less than 21% while making the big bucks from your work wages.

And to add to that, those wages were for an apprentice. A full fledge bricklayer made around $16.50 an hour back then (that was good money). Today that same position gets maybe $ 4.00 more an hour. Add salt to the wound, cost of milk and gas back then was under a dollar.
Today the construction worker is still way under paid.

That guy was a maestro. Those pies are over my head and that's in a conventional kitchen. If you manage it, send a pic.
I'm sorry, I didn't get a chance to make those. I got called into work Saturday and worked all day then relaxed Sunday most of the day. Left town Sunday night at 11:45pm down to Arkansas for a 1 night out relay
