Trying to reduce temps.

Ok, so here is my Question: I'm trying to reduce the temps in my room, but I only have money for one improvement.

Option one, switch my 1000w down to 600w or option two, keep the 1000w and get a Magnum XXL hood.

Keep in mind that my current hood is an old Sun System's hood with the offset 4" ducts, so the Magnum would greatly improve the airflow not to mention a better footprint.

So what does everybody think, which one would lower my temps more? I'm personnally leaning towards stepping down to the 600w.

I don't think just changing your hood will help that much, maybe a little but would it be enough? I would probably go with the 600w. You could put it closer to your canopy, at least make up a little difference for the power loss.

First what are your temps?
Right now, the room temps are between 80-85. Maybe a little higher before the A/C kicks on. I know everything over 85 is bad news. Good thing winter is here for a little bit.

I don't believe the hood will help much either, although I switched my other old hood to a SS2 and I can say that did help. These newer hoods w/ 6" ducts inline with the bulb have much better airflow then the ancient hood I have now.

I think I will be going with downgrade to the 600w. The upgrade on the hood is in the long term plan.

I just want everybody's opinion on their choice between the two.

A little background on what I got going right now is:

2 4x4 flood & drain tables
1 SS2 6" ducts w/ a 600w digi ballast
1 old, old ass sun systems hood 4" ducts 1000w magnetic ballast (just as old as the hood)

I have a long term goal for the upgrades to the room, I'm just trying to get there with the best decision's.

Thanks for the replies RIU.

Here are some i grew at 90 to 100deg with 1000 watter. Heat is not all that critical. You must have good air flow if ya have heat. 85 degrees you are just fine. Save your money. Even after ya spend it. It will only drop 2 to 5 deg.

Damn those look sweet! What stain was/is that?

I do got a couple of fans going in the room. There is definitely no stagnant air in the room. Maybe I will go with the hood instead, it would be worth it for the more usable light and better footprint.

Damn decisions, decisions.

good advice dirty, if you make a wind tunnel your plants can withstand much higher temps. those sun system hoods are meant to be sick though....600 watt bulbs are more efficient than 1000, dunno man if i could i'd be tempted to make the 1000 work

The more I think about it I think going with the 600w will be a better option. At least until I get my room dialed in and happy with everything. Then give the 1000's another go. I'm a bit of a pack-rat anyways, so I'll still have the equipment when I'm ready.

Well I figure I'd bring this thread back from the grave and give an update on what happened. I decided to go with 600 and so far I'm glad I did, the temps are staying around 79-80 degrees right now and that's with no a/c running and it being cold outside. Not sure what it will do to the final results, yet. All in all I'm stoked so far.

After reading my post from last night I think I should explain myself better. In similiar winter conditions a month ago with a 600 and a 1000 going and the a/c not kicking on, the temps would hit 90f. Now with a 600 and a 600 going, no a/c the temps are 79 - 80f. That's the tits to me!

Of course summer is a different matter, but I'm pretty confident the a/c will be able to take care of it.
