Update on slow growth

Very interesting stuff.

I'd bet that my tap water is high in TDS. I'm on a deep well here. I'm confident that what I've done with your help will improve my plants.
I've learned a lot today.

I fed them about half strength Jack's today. I water them when the pots feel light and when the soil feels mostly dry down about an inch or so.

did you say you have a ppm/ec meter yet? i think even half strength 20-20-20 is way too strong for small ladies like those.

i use EC meter and at that height they get maybe 0.3 to 0,5 EC

watch for signs of tip burn and prepare to flush if you do.

dont feed them man the are to small for any food i dont feed mine till they are about 10 -15 cm high and if u do feed them use like a super thrive or a root tonic like rootsxl or rizo get yourself a wet meter i was just talking about this to another dude yes the pot may feel light and the first 2 inches may be dry but the root ball it self may contain alot more water then the outer roots anyways they dont look big enough to have a big root ball atm they will be chassing water so u would want it dry almost to the bottom

I'll have a ppm meter in a day or two. I'll certainly watch out for tip burn and flush if need be.

Thanks.

It's not easy, this marijuana growing thing. I appreciate the advice, man.

camo, it/s a super steep learning curve. take good notes is what i'd recommend. and don't change too many variables all at once.

Ok so.... I started to post on your other thread again the other day but didn't, lol....

Someone said something to like growing is easy as long as a 3-4 things are right. I agree with this so much. Cannabis is an amazing plant that will grow in a wide variety of conditions and generally speaking bounces back really well from problems. (In fact, I'll post some pics of my new mom at the bottom for kicks. I kinda forgot to water her for 3 days and she is in a small pot and was growing like a fucking madman, she bounced back really nice within an hour and only lost a few leaves from it!)

Granted we want to create the ideal environment for the best possible product but often these efforts hinder the grow, especially when first starting out.

At first, and for the first year or so I grew, I read all the books, read the forums, posted, read more, babied my plants, worried over them, etc. I think I did a good job bc most of my grows went very well until I started growing too many strains and too many plants in too small of a space but I've learned you don't have to drive yourself so crazy....

Overall, my best grows were the most simple. The ones I didn't worry so much about or obsess over feeding and stuff.

While I agree that fucking with PH and knowing TDS can be important. For real soil you really don't need to worry so much. I quit using my PH meter after I started using proper soil and I've never ran hydro so I really never needed a TDS meter.

Tap water(you gas it off correct?) can be a huge issue though so you might wanna just switch to bottled. I use Deep Rock artisan well water from King Soopers and never had a problem with it.

Which leads me to the next thing. I actually used the same seedling mix on my first grow . And seedling mix isn't exactly proper soil. I would only use that in the germ dome I talked about before in place of the peat pellets or possibly below them in place of the tga base I usually put in in the bottom of the cone. I would not use such a "soft" and "bland" mix for larger pots/plants.

Now this is where it gets a lil tricky. Your plants are 4(?) weeks post-germ, and as said they should be growing pretty vigorous at this point and you should prob be feeding decent strength nutes once a week or so. But based on size, you prob shouldn't be feeding them anything at all right now.

Which btw, 20-20-20 is VERY strong. If you keep proper organic soil you can feed very "weak" nutes and get amazing results(I'm using vegamatrix and veganic special sauce in tga base soil right now, think I'm gonna actually switch back to using only TGA supersoil, and forget feeding liquid nutes).

Next is your pot size. They look too big for the size of the plant. This is why you might be having overwater and possibly root issues. Too much dirt and not enough roots means the water can sit around in there, get too cold, get slimy, etc. I try to let them "outgrow" their pots, you have to water more often but I feel this lets me keep the soil constantly "moist" instead of wet/dry....

I start off in a peat pellet or root cube, depending if seed or clone, with a lil bit of base soil. Once it has a nice root ball then I'll put in a solo cup, and once that has even more roots I'll move to a 1 gal size, then up to a 3 gal, and I'm gonna be using 5 gal air pots for my new moms.

As for lights, I don't know much about growing with CFLs but if I were you I'd ditch em and get a T5 fixture. I have a 1 x 4' and a 4 x 4', they are great!

Sorry for the ramble, below are the pics I promised of that mom I tried to kill, lol....

The 1st is 3 days before. See how the leaves "point up" that is a sign you have the water and nutes right.
The 2nd is how I found her. THIS is what underwatered plants look like btw. Note: Pic was taken after I watered and sprayed her, that's why the soil and leaves are wet.
And the 3rd is an hour later. Since then she lost a few leaves do to the damage but the others are pointing up again and the tips are growing good. I actually was wanting this plant to slow down a lil(not flowering any new plants till after May 1st) and this has done that, for a few days at least, lol.

PS>

I keep mentioning TGA soil... You can get the base and supersoil ready to use from Acme Hyrdo in Broomfield. You are in Co right? And if you use supersoil, your whole grow is pretty much "just add water".

BTW, you can make your own if you are that sort of dude, check in the organic/sub-cool section. I'm actually looking to venture into more "old school" organics and start brewing teas and shit but with my job and everything it's been easier for me to just buy products like the premade soil and vegamatrix, etc.

I popped my plants out of their pots to check their roots today. All but the smallest of them have troots bumping against the sides of the pots so I don't think the pots are too small.

I've been using a 50/50 mix of Poland Springs and tap water. My tapwater TDS is unknown but likely high as I'm on a deep well. I'm awaiting the arrival of a meter to measure my TDS.

When my plants get a little bigger I'm transferring them to a bigger space and some high intensity lighting (MD and HPS.) I'll likely have to repot and at that time I'll put them in Ocean Forest soil.

I dilute Jack's very heavily but it could still be a problem.

I appreciate your detailed advice.

Thanks

After upping my nute strength to 1000 PPM my plants took off on a serious growth spurt. I appreciate all the input here.

I'm really surprised by that. Stronger nutes was at the bottom of my list of possibilities. When I tried to slow growth with reduced nutrients (to let the slow growers catch up) all I got was deficiencies like brown spots, yellowing.

I thought if your plants wanted more nutes they'd tell you in that manner, not what appeared to be almost bonzai-like stature.

I'm glad you got it worked out. Even though it took awhile to get them moving, you kept them looking good. That's usually a big challenge (and patience) for most growers. You covered both of those. :)

az, you raised my consciousness on many levels. I took your advice and learned a lot from of it. I've still got a ways to go but I think I turned a corner due to you.

Thanks man.
