There's no need for an active tracker to use much power, and the daily gains are substantial. The further north, the more they're necessary to make the returns worthwhile.
I found with my mini setup that a basic microcontroller could do it based on the output of the panel...

It needed capacitors to rotate properly though because the output of the mini panel wasnt enough to rotate the rig I made, it'd just twitch under its own power but I think was just a scaling issue.

After looking at this map, sounds like he's close. Seems Alaska has about half the solar gain of Arizona.

https://solarpowerrocks.com/buying-solar/how-to-calculate-the-amount-of-kilowatt-hours-kwh-your-solar-panel-system-will-produce/
Cool link.

AK- 1100x78%=858. 858x8(kw array)=6864 annual kWh generated.
They did 6710 metered. Sounds like it's about on track for what's to be expected. The two rows of panels are at differrent angles and I assume this is a summer/winter compromise.

God damn that's a beautiful thing to behold...

Its a damn shame they live so far north, I can accept your argument that under extreme conditions it may not yet be economically viable for private citizens to do it.

But that's not to say your State couldn't do it en masse in the wilderness (where the snow would actually reflect alot of light into the panels) and pump it into the grid.

Personally I'm interested in having alternate forms of power/heat for self sufficiency, back up and economics. I've looked at quite a few local solar arrays. As time allows I'll keep chasing this rabbit. I've seen solar improve and expect it will continue to.

good thing we just declared global warming is a chinese hoax and let them pioneer and innovate their way to the top of the industry.

it's not like americans want good paying manufacturing jobs or anything though.

china first.
No kidding, right?

It's like watching someone throw a game...

Painful and pointless.
