Using a portable aircon as a dehumidifier?

Hi all,

Has anyone successfully used the dehumidifying function on a portable aircon to control humidity in their grow tent/room.

I live in a tropical climate in South Africa and have issues with humidity. For this reason I decided to move my growing indoors as I had constant issues with PM when growing outside. Our average outside RH here is 80% in the summer. I have a 9000btu portable aircon which has a separate dehumidifier mode. I hooked this up to a RH meter/controller which allows me to automate the system to switch on and off at set parameters. I left this on last night to keep my RH between 75%-60% for my seedlings but when I came through at around 3am this morning I saw my temps had dropped to 11C (52f) and the RH was still high. My normal night time temps are around 18C (65F). I did double check that the unit was in the right mode.

I switched everything off and played around with the variables this morning (aircon unit in tent/out tent, ducting the air from the unit directly into the tent, different speeds for the inline exhaust fan etc) this morning and could never get the RH below 50% (ambient RH was probably 60%) and all the while it was dropping the temp far too low. The aircon and exhaust fan are ducted out of the room, it is a single outlet version and it does drip water when operating so I'd assume it is working to some degree. I have 2 RH meters and both were giving similar readings at different place in the tent..

Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong or if I'm wasting my time and should get a stand alone dehumidifier?

Thanks guys, awesome community on here. Really learning so much.
