Really matters what type. And I'm talking a soil grow, not sure about other types.
Pure nute ferts that just contain the chemical elements will totally burn a plant or not give it enough depending on the dose. Organic ferts like kelp or guano seem to allow the plant to pull out what it wants without burning, even at twice the dose (or at least that's what I've noticed). I only give my plants pure ferts a few times during vegging if they really need it. During most of the vegging I give them different organics (some seabird/kelp, and some Alaskan fish emulsions). During flowering I switch it around to mostly pure ferts and some organics. I like to think I saved the pure ferts, with much higher salt contents, for the flowering thereby keeping the soil from a salt build up.
