Veg with HPS

I was under the impression you can easily veg under a HPS light. The plants would simply grow shorter and more bush-like then under a MH. Now I've got one bloke who says that HPS should never be used in veg, and that it's the reason I'm having such colossal problems with soil.
The HPS will work better than just fine in veg . The spectrum from the HPS is heavy red and the thought of the red causing stretch is retarded. The key is to have as much usable light as possible. You could have a 400W MH over a 4x4 in veg and your plants will stretch more than if you had 600 HPS covering the same area.

More quality light....

Your strain will determine what light to use. Indica dominant stuff, (shorter fatter plants) veg better under HPS than MH.
Sativa dominant stuff, (taller and skinnier) should veg under an MH.
Simple rule
Why did you decide that?

For the first time I hear about it, I thought 6500K for vegetative growth and 2000K for flowering.
