Virginia Tobacco

Starting inside, moving outdoors in the spring.. Quite a few sprouts so far, I will keep you posted on the progess.
I live in BC, Canada.

Anybody out there tried their hand at growing/processing tobacco?

I grew a few tobacco plants about 15 years ago. The main thing I learned was that what we had always called tomato worms are really tobacco worms. The few smaller, weaker plants I had left at my parents house survived because the chickens kept the worms off them. The big, strong plants in my garden all got ate. I didn't grow enough to learn much about curing, which is when you can ruin a good smoke in a hurry. I've been looking at some of the heirloom seeds online. If I buy seeds, I want to be able to breed them.

Cut worms right? Heard those things are nasty.. I plan on slicing up some rubber tube to fit around the base of each plant so as worms cant get to them, that is once I transplant them outside. Saw the rubber tube idea in a youtube video, seemed to work for buddy.

I've got about 50 or so sprouts now.. there kind of comin up in clumps tho as I didnt evenly broadcast the seed.. oh well, transplanting will be a joy lol

I'll post a picture later, nothing much happening with them at this point tho.

No, not cut worms. These are what we have always called tomato worms. They eat the leaves and stems of several kinds of plants. Here is one from last year's pepper patch. They will clean you out in a few days.

damn, wherebouts do you live? Do you know if diatomaceous earth, or crushed eggshells would stop them?

I remember seeing those little fuckers here in BC when I was a kid.. I remember they squirm funny when you poke em lol

Nice looking sprouts. I'm down here in Northwest Florida. Not sure if that stuff would work or not. I had to use a garden pesticide spray and/or sevin dust to get rid of them. There is a moth that lays the eggs on the leaves. The worms are tiny when they hatch, but get as big as your finger when they have ate your plants. They will feed on tobacco, tomato and pepper plants.

if you grow tobacco and weed be careful to keep the gear ..plants separate

and wash you hands with thoroughly ,

TMV(Tobacco Mosaic Virus) has wiped out many a weed and ciggie grow

and can be very difficult to detect

Thanks for that info. I have been thinking about growing tobacco again, so if I do, I'll use precaution. I gave up cigars 12 years ago when I stopped smoking weed, so I might just give it a pass anyway. If I had it around, I would want to spin one up.

I'm thinking about getting completely away from my home garden for my weed anyway. My risk tolerance isn't what it once was.

I've done some independent research on TMV within cannabis, and it seems to me like most of the pictures are misidentified pests. I'm unsure that it has actually jumped species, but I am not a scientist and could be mistaken. Does anyone know of any definitive proof of TMV becoming CMV?

Definately good to know, I've got all my seedlings in one cabinet right now. Can tobacco seedlings infect cannabis seedlings or is more so when they are older?

So the actual name is mosaic virus and it can and does attack pot.

I've heard so many misleading things about tmv.. and now the general consensus seems to be that cannabis cannot get tmv.. who knows tho, im not taking the risk.. apparently it only attacks the tomato and pepper families..

Either way, I've got 72 Virginias now.. transplanted into solo cups at the moment and slowly being introduced to the outside world.. started under lights, moved to window sills, then to a greenhouse, and soon will be planted in beds.. ill post a pic shortly

Just a portion of them.. Any more advice on growing these things outside?
Pretty sure were almost in the frost free season here, long term forcasts look good.. not super sunny but not cold enough to do damage I would think..

any advice on nutes? spacing? placement in another garden, or should i build a seperate bed for them?

IK, that's a lot of plants. I tried growing 'baccy decades ago and remember that it didn't do so good but it was more of a novelty than anything for me. In hindsight, I don't know if certain cultivars are more resistent to TMV than others? I would just try to keep my garden as clean as possible and plenty of air flow around the tomatoes and such. Seems like TMV is pretty hardy but can somewhat be controlled with a milk spray.

I'd join these forums and get some expert advice. Guys below might pop in with some advice. Good luck man, and keep us informed., especially when you dry and smoke this stuff.
