VPN Advice?

Hey, Guys! Okay, I've been wanting to purchase a VPN service for a while now for a bunch of reasons, one of which is I'd like to do a grow journal here and upload pics and video, like other brave souls have. I've narrowed it down to Witopia and Goldenfrog's, but my question is since I've already established my profile here, RIU has the IP address with which I set it up. So, is it useless to now start posting through proxies since The Man could still find me through the original IP? Please share your knowledge and suggestions, thanks!

Wow, thanks! I opened this profile on RIU from an IP that isn't mine, but it probably could be traced back to me. Oh, well. I'll join another forum to post my grow journals when I activate a truly safe VPN account from your article's list, and I'll do it from Starbucks. +rep for you...

No problem man, hopefully others will see this too and stop using U.S based VPN's, they are dangerous.

tor is good but it has its own problems like everything else such as its very slow and its still possible to be caught doing stuff because anyone can sniff the exit nodes. The other problem is if tor is not configured properly there is a chance that you will give away your real ip in a few different ways. tor is very good if configured properly but an offshore vpn is better for most people. If you want ultimate security then use tor over your vpn connection. That is what a lot of people do. There is also OpenVPN that you can setup and configure your own vpn on a virtual private server which would be a pain in the ass for most people to setup but it is only worth doing if you can get a server in a false name etc which isn't very hard.

If you want to be totally anon then you can't get around it being slow and you have to deal with that. Even with offshore VPN or TOR or whatever you could be found. There is a man who wrote a book on this and he found that with going through a VPN and then another VPN and then using TOR authorities ended up at the orginal VPN computer which he had in a hotel room, he finally got caught when he got impatient with the slowness and was just going through 1 vpn. All of that said...authorities are probably not going to go through the effort to track you over growing marijuana and to be honest thats all you can really count on. Use encrypted data with good passwords and don't use revealing pictures with location information and its pretty hard to track you. I honestly wouldn't worry about RIU having your IP address. Ultimately you are just kind of wasting your time with the VPN and TOR stuff. The real important thing is that your identiy here can't be linked to your real identity in any way and if that is covered you are probably okay.

In the end...unless you are truly offgrid and only use cash and barter then you can be tracked and found. The best you can do is just not make it obvious enough that a common person can figure it out.

Thanks for your input. My understanding is that if one uses an offshore VPN that keeps no logs of one's activity (including IP address) the speed is pretty good and the anonymity is total. I understand that even if US law enforcement were to request info from these offshore VPN, they would either ignore the request or be forced to tell LEO that there are absolutely no records of their users. Granted, there are VPN services that keep logs and would be forced to comply with the request, but many would not and has never happened with their service. The fact that RIU has the IP address from which I set up my profile means it would not be completely safe to post pics and video here as I'm not in a legalized State, and US law enforcement may be able to subpoena their records (any RIU mods, feel free to confirm or deny this). I do agree that LEO wouldn't be too concerned about a bunch of peaceful growers on these internet forums, and have a lot of better things to concern them, but they've been known to like low-hanging fruit to pick ;) Please correct my misconceptions if appropriate, and all input is welcomed!

Your ip on this site is the owners private knowledge. He only knows it because he is the host of the site, thus you share a connection with him "well his server". They would have to ask him for the address which he would refuse. I hardly believe a online picture would be enough to issue a warrant. And in the end its the internet the simple defense Well i got hacked.

I have never heard of this being a problem anyway.

If you are only going thru one VPN then they can figure it out using quite a few techniques although it will be much more difficult. If you are going through 2 then it is nearly impossible. The info RIU has could also be subponea easily so regardless you are taking generally the same risk although it is not much of a risk and you have to be willing to accept that really. If you post pictures on here that identify you or your location then you are taking a much greater risk. Further anything you post on here cannot be deleted so I would be even more concerned in that regard. However, regardless of all this, 10's of thousands of people have posted pictures of their grows on here and other sites for decades and never had a problem except in rare cases when the pictures identify the person.

Just trying to be honest with you, I am a system administrator for a living who specializes in security.

Well, Shit, you're a security admin so you must know what you're talking about :) It's not what I wanted to hear (I like the idea that one off-shore VPN is enough) so it must be true ;) +rep to you...
