Wash your plastic cups if you burn holes in them

I'll save a long story and say that not rinsing the plastic 16oz. cups after burning drainage holes in them definately caused problems in my clones by killing the roots. Rinsing them cleared it up.

why did you burn holes in the first place? knife or scissors not good enough for you? must you combust everything?

straight scissors or those safety ones for retards and children? yeah i use a wood burning tool cuz it works the best. i'd love to see you cut 30 or so 1/8" holes in the bottom of a thick plastic cup with SCISSORS though. lol. maybe you could make a 'how to' video for us who haven't yet tried this incredible method?

i nip the edges in 4 places. it's pretty easy to bust thru 100 in no time. leaves little plastic clippings everywhere though.

i can take some pics if it helps. ;)

Your best bet would be to go to amazon.com and buy the netty pots if you have time i bought a dozen for like $3 of the 3in Ones for my DWC set up 2in are like 15 cents each or something

but if you need them RIGHT NOW and cant wait like i did hhahaha then you can always get something a little more DURABLE than solo cups and Drill through a bunch at once

@exodus yeah solo cups. the clear ones that are thick. struck me as funny trying to poke holes in them with scissors.

also: i have just gotten past a bout with brown algae and think that it's more likely that this is what was killing the roots on my clones. so yeah, super useful thread here. your welcome.

oh my god i had the same algae problem almost lost 4 of my plants.... Take and cover your DWC bin make sure no light can get into it Scrub the shit out of the container before putting new water and your plants back in them... DO NOT USE SOAP just scrub and rinse and repeat then fill it back up clean your airstone off and your hoses out the best you can maybe some rubbing alchy and then rinse again it should be fine after that the plants will slowly develop new roots but to aid it you have to swich your lights to 18/6 or 20/4 so that the good roots can store sugars and shit. Hope this helps

@ exodus - if it was brown algae you had or have again look into beneficial bacteria. sterilization is in my opinion, after many attempts, a waste of time in trying to beat this stuff and there really is no other option

Thanks for the advice mine has since cleared up this was about a month ago but still its good to know, It was also before i had my PH test kit and nutes too so might have just been from the well water... wich is hard to believe i live in the woods there aint shit around but good vegetation and water who knows... hahah

yeah i am on well water too - i switched to vending machine water last year because i finally figured out it was the source of most of my problems. my ppm is like 750 out of the tap. if you find that you have to use a rediculous amount of pH down then you probably have a problem. if you do use well water you might want to look into hard water specific nutes.
