The Ultimate LED Test proved conclusively that LED's are capable of growing quality meds without a huge difference in quantity.

I am now moving down the path to seeing if there is an LED I actually can conclusively say I prefer over the other.

Lights: Blackstar Chrome |vs| Penetrator 336X growing head to head.

Strains: Moby Dick, Super Sour OG, Qrazy Train

I am using a new method of cloning I originally discovered on youtube, but I improvised a bit.

I used 5ml of Hygrozyme in a half gallon of water PH'd to 5.5 to soak the cubes for about an hour. I then poured a little bit of clonex over the holes of each cube and let that sit for about an hour.

I added a cup of RO water inside the clone dome with an airstone bubbling away. I also placed a piece of paper towel over the top of the cup so no water can splash out, but rather onto the paper towel wetting it, and regulating the humidity within the dome. I'm also using a heat pad underneath on medium.

Clones are 8 days in and loving life and veg starts within the week.

Last thread was epic, wejuana! Glad to see you making a comeback. Is the penetrator the 1w or 3w model? Awesome sound fx in the video by the way.

Hey all. Glad to see you found your way to the new thread! bongsmilie

Thanks puffenuff. I am going to be using the 3w Penetrator 336X-Pro against the Chrome 720. I'm glad you like the video also; I figured I have put out enough vids with fan noise, so some FX or music when possible from now on will be added to the videos to make for more enjoyable viewing.

What is the benefit to growing LED over HPS?
There are a few primary differences between LED and HPS.I would not say there is a "benefit" to using LED over HPS, merely preference.

The most apparent difference between the 2 would be using less electricity, followed by less heat. Plants under the LED lights also seem to use less water when compared under HPS, which equates to less maintenance overall throughout the grow.

According to many, the quality of meds from the LED may be a little than that of HPS if the grow is done right, but I have not tested the buds for THC content; something I am considering doing for this upcoming round to provide conclusive results.

WJ really hit it on the head...

It's the cost to run your equipment more than anything, IMHO....

No A/C units, significantly more efficient, which means less heat:light ratio, resulting in fewer fans, less water evaporation (fewer waterings), etc.

Subbed - I am a tech nerd and LEDs are the next step in this process. A year ago it seemed like there were only three viable choices for LED grow lights - now there are so many more! Great info and scientific process WJ!

Cheers,

That first vid was pretty good :) Nice one :) I am definitely curious to see how the chrome does in comparison.

What's your new cloning technique???

Thanks Senseimilla! Glad to have you on the new thread!

The new cloning technique seems to be doing wonders!

Basically the new technique is I place a cup or RO water within the clone dome. I set up an air pump to push air through into an air stone in the cup which diffuses the bubbles. I then placed a piece of paper towel over the top of the cup covering the entire top of the cup of water, as to not let any water splash out because of the bubbling. The splashing water from the cup dampens the paper towel, which then in turn regulates the humidity inside the clone dome to stay very high without having to re-water, mist, or even open the dome.

I'm using a heading pad on medium to keep the dome warmer than the outside dome temp, creating constant evaporation/condensation. I'll get a pic of the roots tomorrow to show the progress over 2 days with this new method. I definitely have to say that this is one of the best rounds of cloning I have ever done, and I am only 9 days in.

Sounds good... do you check your humidity %? What are you trying to keep it at inside the dome? One of my last rounds it got up to 100% and the stems just rotted away :( I was already thinking of getting a heating pad to help my success (room is often below 70) so i may try both those things you mentioned :) Instead of putting water in a cup I put a small layer of water at the bottom of the tray... but thinking your way would b e better will try that next time :)

vlcsnap-2012-08-27-19h52m53s76.pngIMG_1591.jpgIMG_1537.jpgtimewreck about 3 days ago and then a garden overview (I use a light rail and very focused lenses) and then timewreck about 6days ago in the natural light for pics. We run organic. LEDs are Apollo Series modded Aurora's Lights, We run cheaper and typically see the same amount of weed. no heat or mold problems. These are similar to the Chrome, just lil different guts.

How much does the 336x pro raise the ambient temperature to?
The LED's only raised the ambient temp by a degree or 2 within the tents, maximum. I think I have my thermostat at 72, so 74 was the max temp in any LED tent.

Sounds good... do you check your humidity %? What are you trying to keep it at inside the dome? One of my last rounds it got up to 100% and the stems just rotted away  I was already thinking of getting a heating pad to help my success (room is often below 70) so i may try both those things you mentioned  Instead of putting water in a cup I put a small layer of water at the bottom of the tray... but thinking your way would b e better will try that next time
I don't check the humidity, I just let it stay at whatever it is being regulated to internally by the bubbling RO cup, and it seems to be doing wonders!

These are the hairiest looking roots I have ever seen! They literally look fluffy with hairs covering the roots, rather than like fish bones.
They are coming in amazing though. I can't wait to see if this cloning method makes a difference when starting to root them in the pots.

I have 2 test plants, 1 will go in each light tent 1 week prior to the comparison round, this way I have an early indicator plant to warn of any issues that may arise with the comparison plants.

Test plants got their first feeding today (Atami Rootbastic .2ml to a gallon)

The test plants have only had 6 days in their new pots but are already looking happy and healthy.

I am going to be mixing up the nute regiment a little bit during "veg" but I will talk about this more once the clones are ready to pot.. no pun intended.:eyesmoke:

I look forward to seeing this play out. I just started switching my lights on time to 10 on, 14 off and I've had little to no issues with burning. Has anyone else tried this? I've only completed one run so far but I liked the results. I think with the high intensity of the LED lights you may not need them on as long.
