college can seem pointless the first few years when you are getting all prerequisite classes out of the way. then as you get into your major and the classes that really interest you it will become more interesting. as far as whether it's pointless or not i think that solely depends on your major. if you're pre-med then obviously it very important that you have those general skill and knowledge sets. but other majors are different too. some of them you really don't use anything you learn in school as your employer will basically teach you everything you need to know and how to use it. i worked on wall street after college and i have a degree in finance. didn't use a single thing from my degree. employers like to see that you have what it takes to be responsible; that you retain information and that you have some intelligence. individually i also think it teaches young people to start being responsible for themselves and how to manage their time. all in all it's a very necessary tool in most professional careers these days. good luck.

Many views on it...

I think too many kids are pushed to go in the same direction. Too many people trying to go for the highest paid occupations, mostly ended up in desk jobs. There's a lack of artisan crafts and practical skillls that might be better prepared for with more apprenticeships. If they try and get EVERYONE to go to college, a degree is devalued. The want EVERYONE to try for the same career path wi=hich is just not sustainable, instead of encouraging kids to do what they are good at and could offer as a service to society. Too many people with degrees in jobs who still don't know what the fuck they are doing and do not give two flying fucks about what they are doing. Just the piece of paper that says they can. So much of it is convoluted waffle and bullshit rather than people being there who actually have a passion for their chosen subject or even for learning. THose in my class admitted they were only going to stay out of work. Career students. The whole establishment seemed disillusioned and the tutors were just there for the money. No passion. Skill and talent means nothing to people now. Just certificates and resulting paychecks. I cannot believe I was paying for such bollocks.

So I dropped out (but because of other issues at home as well)

I'm currently reapplying for a three year degree in Formal and Informal Writing + Illustration. I'm going to keep my head down and get on with my work, trying my best to ignore the pretentious bullshit. Not to mention the ridiculously complex application process.
yeah and what about all the shit that is good about it? all the university nights, staying up late not studying but just kicking it in the dorm? UNC(chapel hill) had a zombie sock fight! and a paint war, protests over tution hikes. what about all the college fun shit you see on movies. i know its all real. the stupid shit you get to do and the fucked up things you want to but dont do. the really insane moments you'll remember the info they give you in college to go and kill time at random places you wont work for or give a fuck about. the places you go with people just so you wont end up alone in your dorm room doing nothing. what about all that? im so pissed right now, because i missed out on that coming right out of high school. i could have gone and done a ton of crazy shit and had the college experience. "for those who dont know what their doing?" i know exactly what i want. anything to do with saving the environment field job. planting trees treating water getting out and working on parks and rec areas. staying up late as fuck with a ton of people getting stoned after studying my ass off and then going to as state park and just looking at the stars and enjoying everything my parents we pissed off about because they didnt do it. you know the nights in the main game halls walking around on campus with a lite joint or skating on campus wondering what they fuck to do. now im off to community college HOPING and PRAY to GOD that i can at least get some of that. all the while pissed as fuck at my parents for holding me back with their attitudes and their bullshit and their lies. pissed about how things turned out bro??? dude i'll trade you and wish to trade this boring ass 4 years of down time into one fucking awsome college life!!!!

when i think back to when i was 18. i would have taken a year or two off first. would have loved to backpack through europe and explore the world a bit. Maybe spend 6 months in south america - the organ donations of course lol. then come back at 20 and then start college. would have been ready then. wasn't ready when i was 18 thats for sure.
