What's The Deal With Porsche Headlights And Growing Weed? And Is Vipar In The Know?

So we've heard about what's going on with certain Porsche in Europe, right?
http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/02/thieves-stealing-porsche-headlamps-for-marijuana-grow-lights/

Does anyone know what makes Porsche Xenon lights so special? Or is it just a bullshit story made up by the media about the light's ability to grow weed? Or is it that they're easy to steal and you can get a lot of money for them or use them on your Honda? I would think the latter reason and the clueless media is just playing along with a story they're making more topical. So I never really bothered to follow up on this story until I'm looking at Vipars on Ebay UK and I noticed Vipar is selling these lights:

So the question is, does Vipar know something about Xenon lights that we don't yet? Or are they just selling them as a way to make some extra cash? And what would it take to string together some and find out what they can do?

Thanx and Happy Growing Everyone!

The media is pushing this story and pointing the finger at weed growers because it sells papers and probably gets more people to think about stealing them since I hear they are really easy to pop out. In this video you can watch a guy rip off both lamps in under a minute.

Xenon gas lamps peak at 450nm and work instantly while the metal halide side of the lamp is warming up so they do work great for veg but they have a short 2500 hr lamp life which if you're stealing them I guess won't be a big deal.

There is a thread somewhere of a guy who successfully flowers 6 clones under xenon lights that are spare from his 4x4 or something similar. they also make 3500k ones apparently. theyre actually quite cheap, 70w (2x 35w unit) of HID lighting for around $30 US. i kinda like the the idea of using a single one as supplemental lighting to LED panels. the brand to go for is called DDM tuning I think. Will try and dig up the thread.

Found it. https://www.rollitup.org/stealth-micro-cab-growing/575053-growing-car-12vdc-hid-lights.html point being this isnt in any way exclusive to porsche lights, its just a cheap HID light with the kinda cool ability of being able to place them really nicely i guess.

edit: oh and also the vipar ones you linked are not Xenon/HID. they are LED energy efficient replacements that fit the Xenon fixtures i think.

edit2: here are some links i had bookmarked of them for sale. http://dx.com/p/ecar-3035-h11-35w-3000k-3300-lumen-warm-white-xenon-hid-headlamps-dc-9-16v-pair-94951 //// http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/35W-Replacement-Car-Slim-Conversion-XENON-HID-Ballast-Fr-H1-H3-H4-H7-H11-HB4-D2S-/281007966132?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item416d6147b4 (just a ballast, obviously)

^^^Yeah that heat shit threw me for a loop when I heard it from the media. And thank you Chaz and SB for straightening me out. I like what I see from the Xenon spectral data. Looks like they would fit in quite well with most white LEDs. Maybe too much FR/IR, but if heats not an issue it may work well though it could get "stretchy" I guess.

Edit: Then again all that blue would probably counteract any stretching from FR/IR.

Those headlights are normal HID lights, with the discharge tube ,having some Xenon gas inside .
Xenon when ionized ,emitts blue light .
So overall light gets a bright super cool hue of white ......
Like Metal Halide-kinda ... ..(but with more "full " of red wls, than MH ...better CRI than MH.)
Good enough to grow plants ,under them ...
