What's wrong with urine?

I'm still on my first grow, but I've been reading about the benefits of human urine for plant feeding. I'm just wondering why it seems like people are so reluctant to dilute their own urine to use for free? If you can use animal/earthworm shit for fertilizer, what's so negative about using a proven natural source of nitrogen like your own urine? Just curious..

Nasa has been using urine for decades to fertilize plants. It is sterile and loaded with nitrogen.

Just use it man. There isnt a reason other than people who say 'yuck that's disgusting, enjoy your piss buds'.

Oddly enough most of the people shittin on the idea of using urine also believe flushing is a myth. Go figure.

nothing worng with it, though i wouldnt suggest using it as a foliar spray 6 weeks into flower, nothing like pissy bud rot to have all your friend cheering.

seriously though...theres absolutly nothing wrong with using it, just make sure its fresh from the pipes as someone else has stated it comes out sterile but is also a breeding farm for some nasty bacteria.

PS. i dont believe in flushing, i grow organic though....either way i still think it makes next to no diffference.

take a giant steamy dump in your plants as well, it works wonders. NASA pissed in their plants...

I guess I would give it a try if I were growing outdoors..... It would just get stinky as fuck

npk value of human urine is 12-1-3 or something like that. I'm sure in some places it actually keeps people from starvation. here in the civilized world we use various animal shit and think nothing of it.

This whole urine thing... IDK, man. The first thing proponents of this typically exclaim; "it's sterile!"... well sure, most of the time, maybe. That certainly doesn't mean it is free from drug metabolites. It'll also have quite a bit of sodium and chlorides, more or less depending on the urinators diet. Then we have to consider the how this could affect microbes in the soil, even when diluted. The urea will have to be broken down, and as I understand it is actually a somewhat toxic process to many soil organisms and causes pH to sky rocket. The ammonia can gas off as the urea is breaking down, and too much nitrogen in the form of ammonium isn't desirable.

Impact of human urine contamination on soil biota - Wish I could find another copy of this article somewhere.

If urine was bad for plants then scientists wouldnt have wasted all that time trying to replicate it using synthetics. Read the back of the miracle grow box, probably the most commonly used fertilizer out there and youll find this...Urea ;)

Miracle-Gro Ingredients

The All-Purpose Plant Food has a 15-30-15 ratio, meaning that there is 15% Nitrogen, 30% Phosphate, and 15% Potash.

The primary ingredients in the Miracle-Gro powder are as follows:

• 5.8% Ammoniacal Nitrogen
• 9.2% Urea Nitrogen
• 30% Available Phosphate
• 15% Soluble Potash
• 0.02% Boron
• 0.07% Copper
• 0.15% Iron
• 0.05% Manganese
• 0.005% Molybdenum
• 0.06% Zinc

Derived from: Ureaform, Ammonium Phosphate, Urea Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Boric Acid, Copper Sulfate, Iron EDTA, Manganese EDTA, Sodium Molybdate, and Zinc Sulfate.

Notice the almost ten percent Urea? ;)

Urea is synthesized by hepatocytes from ammonia generated by catabolism of amino acids derived either from digestion of proteins in the intestines or from endogenous tissue proteins. Urea is excreted by the kidneys, intestine (high in horses), saliva and sweat. In ruminants, urea is excreted into the gastrointestinal system where it is converted to amino acids and ammonia which are then used for protein production (remember urea is added as a supplement to many bovine diets).
Concentrations of UN are dependent upon:
Hepatic urea production: The rate of urea production is dependent on hepatic function and digestion and catabolism of protein, i.e. urea formation is decreased in liver disease (e.g. portosystemic shunts) and increased with protein catabolism or increased protein digestion in the intestine.

Renal tubular flow rate: Urea is freely filtered through the glomerulus and passively diffuses out of the tubules at a rate dependent on flow rate through the tubules; the remainder of the filtered urea is excreted in urine. At high flow rates, approximately 40% of filtered urea is reabsorbed. At low flow rates, as happens in hypovolemic individuals, approximately 60% of filtered urea is reabsorbed and added back to the blood urea concentration. This explains the high UN levels seen with decreased GFR of any cause.

The problem with useing urine on your plants is that people laugh at you when you tell them because they dont realize that there is so much urine or synthetic urine in your plant food already :):):)

This urea doesn't come from urine, though. There is kind of a big difference between urine and pure urea; urea does not = urine, urine just happens to contain nitrogen in the form of urea as you described. The great majority of urea applied as fertilizer is synthetic, derived from ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia itself is typically derived in some way shape or form from natural gas, coal, or petroleum; hydrocarbons... it's a petrochemical. One-hundred million tons of the stuff sure as hell didn't come from pee.

They also run the urine thru a purification process and recycle the water for drinking. Disgusting, yes. Unsafe? No.

Cannabis is quite sensitive to sodium. Many plants are not. Those are good candidates for the brackish nute we leak from our nethers. Weed ... not. cn
