I wouldn't top it,, tie it back and train it. You don't need to cut off potential bud's my friend. I tie my plants back and they do just fine. Nice bushy plants with big leaves and lots of sprouts coming out everywhere. Stems are healthy. Topping plants is so you have a bushy plant, why cut them when you can tie them back and get the same affect. There is also a system called SCROG. You cover you plants with a wire thing and push big leaves down and let the new growth pop through. Google it and you will see what I mean.
