When Police Go Bad?

As of lately I've seen alot of police hate threads. Most of which are justified. There are a couple that aren't all that serious and people will talk about hanging the cops. Maybe we should have a thread dedicated to the little things. I'll start.

In most states the police can seize property they suspect has been used to commit a crime. Under “civil asset forfeiture” laws, they typically do not have to prove “beyond a reasonable doubt” that a crime was committed, or even charge anyone with an offence. What is more, the money raised by auctioning seized houses, boats and cars is often used to boost the budgets of the police department that did the seizing. That can mean fancier patrol cars, badass hardware or simply keeping the budget plump in lean times. In one survey 40% of police executives agreed that funds from civil-asset forfeiture were “necessary as a budget supplement”. This conflict of interest has predictable consequences. It spurs the police to pay more attention to cases that are likely to involve seizable assets (such as drug busts) and less attention to other ones. A report from the Institute for Justice, a pressure group, calls it “Policing for Profit”.

One of my personal peves is the number of laws that are routinely broken by individuals (eg. jaywalking, driving with cell phone, not using a turn signal, etc.). We have created an environment in which every citizen is regularly breaking the law, and law enforcement can be arbitrary in how it enforces, and who it intimidates.

If a cop wants to pull you over, it is easy as pie to find a violation to justify it. If a cop wants to frisk you on the street, no problem, easy to come up with something. The law should not be used to make one class of citizens vulnerable to police actions-- yet that is just what happens. Lower income folks and urban dwellers can't realize the freedoms middle class suburbanites have, and that makes me mighty cranky.

And another thing-- I can't believe that people can be arrested for passively video recording police.

Great post, that's one of the things that's caught my attention the past few years as well...

Like how all they have to do is follow you to pull you over. You roll on a solid yellow, pulled over. You roll through a stop sign a little too fast, pulled over... Then they give you a ticket for a nonviolent crime that didn't hurt anyone or cause any damage that costs, typically, $50-$75. Even the cops I talk to who I'm a little cool with say they do that shit. One guy even told me one time it's virtually impossible NOT to be pulled over if a cop wants to do it, regardless of what you may or may not have done, the guy WILL find a reason...

Same shit with the dogs... all the cop has to do is say "oh the dog signaled on your car, now we have the right to search" - and that's that... Even if you say no, they make you wait (in the cold outside the car) 45 minutes for a K-9 unit to roll up then illegally search through your shit to find nothing and let you be on your way...

Power and control - that's what it's about.

The thing you people are missing is...

How often do you think cops really pull people over for these little things?

Very rarely... hell, I had a guy run a red light RIGHT in front of me just yesterday and a cop that was next to me did nothing at all.

Oh well, my philosophy is never break more than one law at a time... that means if I'm carrying pot, I will obey EVERY traffic law to the tee... do 5 mph under the speed limit, complete stops at stop signs, blinker usage... and I'd like to think that's why I haven't been pulled over since I was a teenager.

On another note, if the cop asks if I've got something that I shouldn't have... I will admit to having pot, causing LESS trouble for them, causes less trouble for you.

Benassi, PERFECT example of police going bad... as he was a cop before, now he's a rapper, and a freakin' shitty rapper at that... bravo my friend, perfect example!

Yep... and the point to your post in regards to the topic of this thread is???

Or did you just come here to try and incite another fight about cops?

Please, keep "wondering" if it keeps your fingers off the keyboard and away from stupid rhetoric you pawn.

I've had police pull me over for both little and bogus reasons on several occasions. I'm sure other people here have as well, and could fill a separate thread with the stories. The most memorable for me was when I was pulled over by a cop who said he was "just bored" and his "daughter has the same car and needs a new bumper"-- funny guy, that.

Not sure where you live, but in many places police routinely hastle the innocent. Frankly, in my life, police have been more of a threat than protection; it's too bad for me and too bad for them.

To correct for anyone else who reads this thread: DO NOT EVER admit anything to the police; there is not a sober lawyer that would advise differently.

It happens much more often than you think man. I'm guessing you're a white male, early 20's? Correct me if I'm wrong. But if so, same as me, it doesn't really happen to us that often, I guess it would probably depend on your area, but you can't deny that racial profiling exists, even today. Innocent people get targeted, prosecuted through the legal system (which could have a thread dedicated to the corruption/incompetence involved in itself) and convicted for crimes they either didn't commit or the "crimes" themselves are nonsensical - like marijuana prohibition - agreed at least on that one SS?

How is this system of enforcing the law upon each individual officers idea of "justice" on scene - especially given what we know about human emotions and how people react in extreme situations - good? Shouldn't the law be what it's meant to be - blind? Why would you support a system that's so subjective when deciding the outcome of someone elses life? Law and order go out the window in such systems, which might be the reason we look around today and order is pretty much only in our minds, as a concept of what we want the world to look like, and not the reality of how it is.

I didn't say it doesn't happen, I said it happens rarely... cops don't want to write the 10,000 tickets a day they could for every little infraction they see.

As for the never admit anything to police, it depends on WHAT you're admitting to.

If the cop is bent on searching my vehicle, he smells it, whatever... I know I'm going to get busted for the pot, might as well tell him I have it, hand it to him, and hopefully since I was nice about it, he wont take me to jail for it.

Rarely....I think it depends where you live........there are a lot of crooked cops out here......that will fuck with you for any reason.......I respect police.....the ones that actually do there job without bias........but out here that is what is rare.....

That's exactly what I'm talking about. What the hell kind of system gives the officer the right to decide to uphold the "law" or not, based on how the "criminal" acts after the crime?!

Just sounds a little fuckin' retarded to me...

I wish it did happen rarely. If that were the case, I wouldn't have put up my first post in this thread. Cops don't hand out tickets for illegal searches, or for the hassles they give people; for them, it is a random check to see if they hit 'pay dirt'. Besides, the point I was most trying to make was that we live in a world where breaking the law has become the norm, which gives the police the ability to pick whomever they want to hassle.

I would recommend you watch the video I posted. Trust me: your self incrimination does nothing to make the police behave leniently.

BTW, if you skydive, I'm envious.

Laws have been around for thousands of years... and it was the same back then, usually someone would always be breaking a law... yes there are a lot of laws, but it's your obligation to know them, and besides... why are you blaming the cops, they don't make them, they enforce me... more laws, more enforcement, wanna change it, talk to your elected officials...

Good deal!

Most cops, if you actually treat them like a human and let them know you appreciate what they do, they will be all sorts of cool...

The young ones my age are the ones I worry about.

They weren't raised the Bible loving good boys and girls of the 50's, 60's and 70's

Yea it was a good deal.He didn't say how old the cop was though.

He said that they could of hit him with possession with intent.Possession of controled substance, dui and so much more.
He is so lucky.I know I would of got locked up lol.I need to just shut my mouth when the cops come. They cant really take a joke, especially when it involves fucking there mom.
Honesty is the best policy with the cops, unless your carrying some weight, got warrants, etc lol If thats the case then you better lie your ass off.
