When Red Hairs Are 50%~See Pic is this it? See Pic Attached.

Ok I have read about how to judge when harvest time is but am apprehensive about it. One of the minor branches has maybe 50% red hairs now on the top bud. See the picture attached, and tell me (plz) is this what the bud is supposed to look like at harvest?

Also the other branches, buds and nugs are not turning red yet, is this typical, if so, should I harvest a branch or bud at a time while as they ripen up to 50%?

I really like smooth smoke, other than the usual instruct of dry till stem cracks and mason jar burp for a couple weeks is there anything else I can do to turn the smoke smooth?

music...?(deathmetal).well buds are ready by trichomes not hair. 1/3-3/4 amber trichomes. the hair is for collecting male pollen(pistil)

trichomes tell the story of development not the pistils, yet once most of the sex organs are gone the plant begins to wilt and decay, turning trichomes from clear to milky to amber and then eventually to brown. I would pick a little before the degradation period when its almost 50/50 milky to amber ratio.

I agree, the most precise way to check for ripeness is looking at the trichomes. Picked up a 60-100x magnifying scope from Radio Shack for $10.

this is from fdd's harvest tutorial, the pics make it pretty easy to see.
we will start with ripeness. most people say to check your trichromes with 30X magnification. i have other ways. when buds are done they look "done". the appearance of the bud changes. the leaves start to hook upwards and become hard and crispy. the calyxes will swell and the hairs will turn brown. you can see a golden tinge to the bud leaves. this is the amber crystals. they start to turn amber on the leaves first.

I'd guess I have a good three weeks to go before harvest, the Pistils are just starting to brown/redden.
I am hoping to find a really nice microscope used but will probably buy the RS Loupe too.
This is a bottom branch, the tops are still white, I think I am on track now.
Any estimations at time left to ripen are welcome.


I used a system restore on my computer and the attachments are now functionining.

Not great quality pic but id say a couple more weeks. When you hit post attachment on the bottom right is the original uploader...try that.

Bought the Radio Shack loupe still waiting for harvest, the trichs are clear some milky none amber. I want to harvest now. I do plan on leaving a couple branches that I pollinated on to allow the seeds to mature fully.

its hard to be patient, but worth it.

The plant has gone through an "odor bomb" phase.
Just starting really getting potent, every time I open the door to the grow room, hit with a more potent smell than in the past. Nice : )
