When To Harvest

I found this in the FAQ, but the author doesn't appear to finish the thought by stating the color you seek from the trichomes to indicate when to harvest. Any thoughts on harvest trichome color?

when to harvest
Hi, I see alot of people making statements referring to harvesting by the color of the stigma's. IE, they usually say when the stigma's turn red, you harvest.

In case anyone is "lost" by the word stigma, these are the hairs growing off your bud.

Someone even made this visual aid....

This is so wrong,, and not a good way to determine when to harvest at all.

You need to harvest by the color of the trichomes.

You'll need a 30x glass, loop or microscope. (I bought a 30x uptp100x scope with light at radio shack for only $10.00)

The stigmas, as well as their color, can be seen easily with the naked eye. The trichomes can be seen with the naked eye too, but you can’t see the color change without magnification. The trichomes, with the naked eye, look like crystals of sugar on the bud and surrounding leaves.

You can see in this picture below, that the hairs are about 50% red, but the trichomes appear totally clear. With magnification you can see that many of the trichomes are starting to turn amber on the caps and some have the amber streaking down the stalk. Again, to see the trichome color you need magnification, and can’t be viewed in this picture.

I've been asked repeatedly, is there any way to tell by looking with my eye, and the answer is no.
However, to make thing easier on you, this is what I picked up for only $9.99
Which should fit everyones budget.

basically the theory is that when the trichomes are cloudy they give you a head buzz but as they turn amber they mature and give you a body stone. they say you should harvest depending on you preferences, for instance i like a mix of both so i would take my buds when the r about 50/50 but i would also probably take some earlier too for partys and things like that. happy growing.

i agree: cloudy = sativa-like headhigh, amber = indica-like bodyhigh

i like a mix too, my preference is about 60/40 cloudy:amber. ive had bottom pieces of weed that i grew out longer turn really amber and the high is pure couchlock. its all about preference, good luck!

So should it be evident with the naked eye that the leaves may be "tinted" a particular color based on the maturity of the trichomes?

thank you GI, but I'm talking about harvest, not cured buds. The buds will turn color as they cure usually, I just wondered about trichome color and if it was noticable with the naked eye.

You will not be able to see the colour with the bare eye, best to get magnifying. oh yeah like the avatar, i seem to be attracting a lot of Hermies these days and with only enough grow space for one plant it really isn't good, good luck and happy toking.
